South River firm to improve township’s roads
by Frank J. McMahon The Mahwah Township Council has awarded a contract to Star of the Sea Concrete Corporation of South River for its 2009 road improvement program. The contract, not to exceed $250,242, was awarded as part of the 2009 Northwest Bergen Cooperative Resurfacing Program in which the Borough of Ramsey was the lead agency. The Star of the Sea Concrete Corporation was the lowest responsive bidder for the resurfacing of streets in the boroughs of Allendale, Midland Park, Oakland, Ramsey, Saddle River, Ho-Ho-Kus, Franklin Lakes, Waldwick, and Mahwah. The project in Mahwah will include portions of Macarthur Boulevard, plus Ridge Road, Glen Gray Road, Greene Street, and Chestnut Street. The council also approved a resolution to award a $29,600 professional services contract to Boswell McClave Engineering, the township’s engineering firm, for the inspection and construction management services during the construction phases of the project. The money to fund this year’s project has been included in the township’s 2009 municipal budget according the Mahwah Chief Financial Officer Kenneth Sesholtz and Mahwah Township Administrator Brian Campion. Last year, the township awarded a construction contract for the municipality’s 2008 road improvement program in the amount of $636,952, plus an amount of $62,013 for certain additional, related work for items that were not included in the Northwest Bergen Cooperative Pricing Program. They included concrete curbs, traffic lines, loops and leads, cracked sealing, removal and replacement of roadway base, and installation of 18 inch RCP pipe. The total road improvement cost for 2008 was $698,964. Under a separate contract, a major portion of Corporate Drive was recently milled and repaved. Corporate Drive extends from Macarthur Drive to Route 17, and is the location of the township’s municipal building, several corporate buildings, and a hotel. This project is being funded by two state local aid grants totaling $350,000. Boswell will be paid a fee estimated not to exceed $13,000 for its design engineering services for that project, and a fee not to exceed $26,000 for its inspection and construction management services. The milling and repaving of Corporate Drive began at the intersection of Corporate Drive and Macarthur Boulevard and proceeded north to a point just south of the turn in the road toward Route 17. The end of the roadway near Route 17 will be milled and repaved by the developer of the Robbie’s Music Barn property at the end of Corporate Drive near its intersection with
Route 17, where a 111-room Hampton Inn & Suites hotel has been approved for construction on the southern portion of that site by the township’s planning board. The main entrance to that hotel will be on Corporate Drive and OTO Development LLC, the developer of that property, has agreed to mill and repave about 415 feet of that portion of the roadway from curb to curb up from Route 17 to the end of its property along Corporate Drive.
