Page 24 THE VILLADOM TIMES II, III & IV • June 10, 2009 DVDs (continued from Restaurant page) world countries. Anyone who knows too much about the bank’s operations, and any law enforcement officer who gets close to digging up proof of the bank’s clandestine activities, are quickly eliminated by the bank’s hit team. A highlight of the movie is a dazzlingly filmed shootout in Manhattan’s Guggenheim Museum, which is spectacularly staged. A key meeting at a climactic point in the film is to take place at the museum, and Salinger and his New York team are about to close in when all hell breaks loose and the art repository turns into a shooting gallery, with good guys, bad guys, and unknown guys with automatic weapons running up and down the museum’s famous ramps as art patrons cringe, bullets fly, art is defaced, and people are shot. Blu-ray extras include deleted scenes, a making-of featurette, another featurette explaining how the Guggenheim sequence was planned and filmed, and director commentary. A digital copy of the movie is included with the Bluray edition. “The Jack Lemmon Film Collection” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) contains five features starring Lemmon made in a 10-year period. “Phffft!” (1954) costars Judy Holiday, Best Actress Academy Award-winner for “Born Yesterday.” The screen chemistry between Holiday and Lemmon raises this often routine romantic comedy to a higher plane. Robert and Nina divorce after eight years of marriage. Robert hangs out with womanizing Navy pal Charlie Nelson (Jack Carson), while Nina looks to her interfering mother for guidance. Both start seeing other people, but it seems the path of true love leads right back to a familiar place. Look for Kim Novak in her first featured role. “Operation Mad Ball” (1957) takes a screwball look at a party planned by a group of service men and their ongoing efforts to keep it a secret from an obnoxious officer, Captain Locke (Ernie Kovacs). Lemmon is Private Hogan, who balances this deception with his romancing of Lieutenant Betty Bixby (Kathryn Grant). Mickey Rooney and Dick York co-star. By the time Novak re-teamed with Lemmon in 1962 for “The Notorious Landlady,” her star had risen considerably. She had starred in “Picnic,” “The Man with the Golden Arm,” “Pal Joey,” and “Vertigo.” Lemmon is William Gridley, newly arrived in London from the United States. He rents part of Carly Hardwicke’s (Novak) house and promptly falls in love with her. But she has a clouded past. Many believe she killed her husband, and that leads to farcical plot turns deftly handled by Lemmon. The other titles in the set are “Under the Yum Yum Tree” (1963, co-starring Carol Lynley) and “Good Neighbor Sam” (1964, with Romy Schneider). Extras include the documentary “Jack Lemmon: The Man behind the Magic,” narrated by son Chris; a vintage photo gallery; and an episode of “Ford All-Star Theater,” “Marriageable Male.” “Baby on Board” (National Entertainment Media) stars Heather Graham and Jerry O’Connell as Angela and Curtis, who have a loving relationship, a comfortable home, and successful careers. When Angela announces she is pregnant, however, their lives turn into a nine-month comedy of errors in which each suspects the other of cheating. They contend with emotional and hormonal mood swings, and unanticipated drama caused by their friends Danny (John Corbett) and Sylvie (Katie Finneran), who suddenly find their own marriage in peril. Through all this, Angela worries that her job is in jeopardy as she strives to please her demanding boss (Lara Flynn Boyle). Watching a movie like “Baby on Board,” one really appreciates star power. Though the performers are all good and sometimes land the gags with good timing, it is tough to be fully engaged. O’Connell has the ability to play both the goofy fall guy and the romantic lead, yet here he is somewhere in the middle. Boyle scores points as the boss from hell, as she manages to elicit sympathy for what could have been a one-note performance. The Blu-ray edition is pretty bare bones, with a director commentary, trailer, and photo gallery. TV episode sets with loads of extras are ideal. Folks who buy these sets obviously love the shows and want to know everything about them. “The Shield: Season 7” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) offers fans a treasure trove of goodies, including 51 deleted scenes, two information-filled featurettes, and cast and crew commentary. Both a critical and viewer favorite, “The Shield” owes a large part of its success to Michael Chiklis, who portrays colorful rogue cop Detective Vic Mackey, who dispenses justice according to his own formula in order to keep balance in the criminal population of a seedy Los Angeles area. Think Kojak with a dark side and a sense of justice that favors the good guys. Twelve uncut episodes are included.
