The Junior League of Bergen County has awarded the Janet Van Alstyne Award to Ramsey resident Catherine Dodwell. The annual award is presented to a member of the organization in recognition of her ability to use her training and leadership skills in the local community. Dodwell has made a significant impact on the community through her volunteer work with Ramsey High School, Hasbrouck Heights High School, Girl Scouts, and Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs. In addition to serving as an assistant treasurer to the Ramsey High School Band, Dodwell is known for her service as one of the “Drama Mamas,” a group of mothers of past and present students, who provide ancillary support for the Ramsey High School Drama Club. The Drama
Mamas design and sew costumes for the students, assist the actors and crew during the performances, and provide skilled help with costume dilemmas. Dodwell also has taken on the role of advisor for the literary magazine at the Hasbrook Heights High School. Dodwell serves as a sounding board for students’ concepts, and a source of organizational support for their ideas. In addition to her tireless assistance with Ramsey Girl Scout Troup 738, specifically with wreath and cookie sales, Dodwell is a volunteer with the Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dog Program. She and her yellow Labrador, Olivia, have undertaken special training to become properly certified. They visit with nursing home residents regularly. Dodwell intends to expand that service to include visits
