Ramsey July 15, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 3 This month, Bergen County’s engineering department will be performing major construction at the intersection of Main Street and Central Avenue in Ramsey. The construction will take approximately two months and will include the widening of the intersection and reconfiguring the traffic lanes. During this project, a temporary traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Darlington and North Central avenues. Motorists are advised that there will be lane closures and detours while the construction is underway. Traffic backups are anticipated and residents are urged to consider alternate Pictured: Bob Keane, public works; Ramsey Borough Administrator Nicholas Saros; Ramsey routes. “One of our top pri- Mayor Christopher Botta; Sal Zuccaro of Zuccaro, Inc.; Eugene Murphy, Bergen County engiorities has been to allevi- neer; Tom Connolly, director of Bergen County Public Works; Freeholder Vice Chairwoman ate traffic congestion and and Ramsey resident Julie O’Brien; Randy Sietz, Bergen County assistant engineer, traffic improve safety in the Main signals; Freeholder Vernon C. Although it took a to the public. “To that end, upon first entering office, I little longer than we had hoped, the county is now ready met with the (Bergen) County Engineering Department in to begin the project. As many have experienced, vehicles Hackensack to discuss improvement of the North Central often back up to the train tracks on one side, and to the County to begin construction at Main and Central library on the other, not to mention along North and South Central Avenue, at this intersection.” According to Botta’s letter, the project will add dedicated left turn lanes, new and improved traffic signals with left turn signals, lane widening, new curbs and sidewalks, improved pedestrian crosswalks, and pedestrian signals. The county will also install a traffic signal at the intersection of Darlington Avenue and North Central Avenue. The new traffic signals will be coordinated with the railroad crossing in order to avoid stacking of vehicles to the tracks when trains are approaching the Ramsey station. “We were also able to convince the county to repave Main Street from Cherry Lane to Spruce Street,” the mayor said. He pointed out that when the borough completed the Main Street curb and sidewalk improvements in 2006, the construction crew did not set the stamped asphalt crosswalks on Main Street. “At the time, we were waiting for the county to repave Main Street and we did not want to have to do the crosswalks twice if and when Main Street was repaved. Now that the County has committed to repave Main Street to Spruce, we will be adding stamped asphalt crosswalks at the pedestrian crossings from North Central to Spruce Street to match the downtown streetscape. These new crosswalks, which will be funded by the borough, will significantly improve pedestrian safety on Main Street, since they will be red brick in color, and will contrast with the pavement and new striping along Main Street,” Botta said, adding, “I want to thank the county for their efforts and cooperation in bringing this project to fruition.” The Greater Ramsey Chapter of UNICO announced the election of the new officers for 2009-2010.
