July 15, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 17 Mahwah Minutes Homer’s ‘Odyssey’ to be performed The Mahwah Public Library presents The Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey’s Next Stage eNSemble of “The Odyssey” by Homer on Tuesday Aug. 4, at 7 p.m. Director Jason King Jones, who began with the company as an intern in 1999, has developed this fast-paced, creative retelling of key scenes from Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey,” one of the earliest masterpieces of Western literature. Following the fall of Troy, the clever Odysseus and his band of warriors and sailors begin a dangerous journey home. Storms, spirits, a Cyclops and a sorceress are just a few of the adventures that await them as they try to reach Ithaca. This program is recommended for ages eight and up. Each summer, abridged classics of the theater are presented by early-career actors from the Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey. The Next Stage eNSemble program brings live theater to New Jersey communities. No tickets are necessary for this free program. Latecomers will be seated during appropriate breaks. DiDomizio named to Dean’s List Nicole DiDomizio, daughter of Angelo and Christine DiDomizio of Mahwah, has been named to the Dean’s List at Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania for the spring 2009 semester. DiDomizio, a 2008 Mahwah High School graduate is majoring in accounting. Summer Music Festival continues The Summer Music Festival continues on Tuesday, July 21 with flutist Shawn Wyckoff and violinist Maria Millar, who will perform classical works by composers Bach, Telemann, Mozart, and Dvorak and a sprinkling of pop, blues, folk and Irish traditional music at the Mahwah Library. Young athletes sought for Olympic Day Registration for the young Mahwah athletes competing in the first Mahwah Olympic Day will be held on July 23 and 24 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the recreation building at Commodore Perry Field. Proof of age and residency must be provided. Age will be determined by date of birth as of Aug. 1, 2009. Mahwah Olympic Day will be held Saturday, Aug. 1 at Mahwah High School beginning at 10 a.m.. This new family event will feature seven competitions for girls and boys in two age groups: eight through 10, and 11 through 12. There will be events in running, soccer and football kicking, baseball and football throwing, and the long jump. An Olympics-style awards ceremony will follow will gold, silver and bronze medals being awarded. There will be no registration the day of the event. Water department issues information The Mahwah Water Department found elevated levels of lead in drinking water in some homes/buildings in the community. Lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and children six years and younger. The following steps reduce exposure to lead in water: run water for 15-30 seconds to flush out lead; use cold water for cooking and preparing formula; do not boil water to remove lead. Vacation Bible School offered to preschoolers The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Mahwah will host the “Little Way” Vacation Bible School program for preschool children ages three through five, from July 27 through 31. Hours are 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. This year’s program, Wonderfully Made! Celebrating God’s Creation, is designed to sow the seeds of the Gospel in tiny tots through creative and fun-filled activities, including stories, arts and crafts, music, and play. Seniors invited to picnic The Mahwah Recreation Committee will host its annual Seniors Picnic on Thursday, July 16 at noon at Continental Soldiers Park. All Mahwah senior citizens are welcome to gather for this annual event. Ramapo College sets concert series The best of rock and pop tribute bands will headline the 2009 TD Bank Summer Concert Series hosted by The Ramapo College Foundation on the college campus. Enjoy great music and a picnic with friends on the band shell lawn. Neil and the Diamonds will have the audience singing along to Neil Diamond’s classics in this high-energy show that covers the artist’s most popular songs on Thursday, July 16. On Thursday, July 23, 2U, the U2 tribute band, will perform oldies and songs from the band’s latest releases. Professional impersonators faithfully recreate the songs. Asbury Fever, the self-proclaimed ultimate party band, will celebrate the music of Bruce Springsteen on Thursday, July 30. The musicians share a passion for Jersey Shore music made famous by Springsteen, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, Little Steven, Clarence Clemons, Bon Jovi, John Eddie, and Gary US Bonds. The concerts, held at the band shell on the college campus, begin at 8 p.m. Concerts are free; parking is $5 per vehicle. In case of rain, concerts will be held in the Bradley Center Arena. Paddle Days and Movie Nights set The Mahwah Recreation Committee has set aside Tuesdays in July for family fun. Paddle Days will be held on July 14, 21 and 28 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Continental Soldiers Park. Canoes, kayaks, life jackets, and instructions for this event are donated by Ramsey Outdoor Store for the use of Mahwah residents of all ages. Following the adventure on the lake, all are invited to the weekly Movie Night at 8 p.m. Enjoy popular family movies and refreshments. Old Station Museum and Caboose open The Old Station Museum and Caboose in Mahwah are now open each Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. through Oct. 25. Built in 1871, the station is a historic landmark and served as the railroad station in Mahwah until 1904. On display is a collection of Erie Railroad china from the dinning cars of the long distance passenger trains, tools of the trade featuring lanterns, hat badges, locks, timetables, and tickets used by various railroad workers. Step into the station master’s office, and listen to the train engineers talking to each other. Next to the Old Station is the 1929 Caboose. The Caboose was the traveling office for the train crew and contained bunk beds, sink, desk and was originally lighted by oil lamps. The Old Station House and Caboose are located at 1871 Old Station Lane and East Ramapo Road next to the current Mahwah train station. There is ample parking. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.” The exemplary novel of the Jazz Age, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s third book, “The Great Gatsby” (1925), is the story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby, his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, and lavish parties on Long Island.
