The Ramsey Board of Education recently recognized the Ramsey High School Boys Golf Team for winning the 2009 New Jersey North Group 2 State Championship. Playing Rockleigh Golf Course’s Black Tees at over 6,800 yards, par 72, Ramsey shot a four man total 328 earning a three stroke championship over Tenafly. Sophomore Mat Goldman led Ramsey with a 4-over 76, which was the low round by any Bergen County Player and second lowest in the tournament. Junior Keith Prokop shot an 81, sophomore Anthony Schifano an 84 and junior Scott Rothlisberger an 87. With this victory, Ramsey earned a trip to the 75th Annual NJ Tournament of Champions held at the demanding Burlington Country Club in Mount Holly. Coached by Keith Nixon and Ken Schmarge, Ramsey played consistent golf all season and finished the year a strong ninth against the most competitive programs in the state. Ramsey competed in the NBIL, considered by many to be the strongest golf league in New Jersey. Featuring balance and depth, eight players contributed this season. Kyle Landau and Kyle Mast along with juniors Jon Ashton, Keith Prokop and Scott Rothlisberger are all eligible for 2010. Only Jachoon Kim has graduated. A prime example of the strength of Ramsey’s depth was when the players shot a four man total of 142, equaled only once in the county this season for a 9 hole match. Goldman’s strong 18-hole tournament play, along with his consistent 9 hole scoring eared him First Team all NBIL,
Honorable Mention All- County and Second Team Group 2 All State honors. Prokop’s 38.9 average tied him for the tenth lowest in Bergen County and earned him Second Team all NBIL. Ashton’s 41.8 average along with a strong 78 at the Nasser County Championship were just a few of the low scores that earned him Second Team all NBIL. Schifano finished with a 42.3 average and was selected for the Honorable Mention All NBIL Team.
