It is commonly called the “police, fire and museum parking lot.” The project included the re-grading and repaving of the entire parking area between Miller Road and King Street, the construction of sidewalks to and from the buildings, and the improvement of the access points to the parking area from Miller Road, King Street, and Franklin Turnpike. Last spring, the council discussed the possibility of improving the Miller Road and Franklin Turnpike intersection, which could lead to a road widening in that area. According to Boswell Engineering, about $20,000 to $40,000 has already been expended on the design of the project, but the council is concerned about the potential safety of the road widening at the intersection where two gasoline stations are located and where tanker truck deliveries have to be accommodated. The council debated the potential precedent setting impact from that situation also, but agreed by a 5-1 vote with one abstention to grant the waiver primarily because the wall had been an existing wall that was just being replaced.
