Taxpayers are encouraged to get a head start on preparing their taxes, especially since early filers avoid the last minute rush and get their refunds sooner,” said Internal Revenue Service Spokesman Gregg Semanick. Here are 10 easy ways to get a jump on your taxes long before the April 15 deadline arrives. Gather records in advance. It is never too early to start getting together any documents or forms you will need when filing your taxes: receipts, canceled checks, and other documents that support an item of income or a deduction you are taking on your return. Be on the lookout for W-2s and 1099s, coming soon from your employer or financial institutions. Find your forms. Whether you file a 1040 or 1040-EZ, you can download all IRS forms and publications from the IRS.gov Web site or request them by calling the IRS tollfree at 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676). Do a little research. Check out IRS Publication 17 on IRS.gov. It’s a comprehensive collection of information for IRS: Begin working on taxes early Area taxpayers highlighting everything you will need to know when filing your return. Review Publication 17 to ensure you are taking all credits and deductions for which you are eligible. Publication 17 can be requested by calling the IRS toll-free at 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676). Think ahead to how you will file. Will you prepare your return yourself, or go to a preparer? Do you qualify to file at no cost using Free File only available at the IRS.gov website? Are you eligible for free help at an IRS office or volunteer site through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program? Will you purchase tax preparation software, or file online? There are many things to consider. Give yourself time to find the option that best suits your needs. Take your time. Rushing to get your return filed increases the chances you will make a mistake and not catch it. Take your time to ensure you do not miss out on any tax deductions, credits, and benefits. Double-check your return. Mistakes will slow down the processing of your return. On Jan. 1, a 26-year-old Bloomingdale man was arrested on Watch Hill Road for aggravated assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest after the officer stopped to investigate the stopped vehicle in which he was a passenger. The officer observed blood on the man and while attempting to question him about it, the man exited his vehicle and attacked the officers. He was subdued, arrested and later transported to the police station for processing. Due to his state, he was transported to the hospital for observation and given a court appearance date in the future. On Jan. 4, a 56-year-old Mahwah man was arrested on Franklin Turnpike for assault after the police were called for a domestic disturbance. The officers found the victim had been assaulted by the man and they arrested him. He was processed and released with a pending court appearance required.
