McMahon The Mahwah Township Council has renewed its animal control contract with the Bergen County Animal Shelter in Teterboro for the 2009 calendar year. The contract, which is not to exceed $36,574, includes stray animal patrol and response, stray animal housing and care, rabies control and vaccination, surveillance trapping and testing, veterinarian services for sick and injured stray animals or round-the-clock animal control for sick, diseased, injured or trapped animals. The contract also covers quarantine services for strays, animal control related euthanasia services, and rabies testing for exposure. Additional services to the township will include rescue and impoundment of stray domestic animals not limited to public property, community education services, a rabies clinic, wildlife rescue including large injured animals such as deer, feral and dangerous animal trapping, maintenance of lost and found file for dogs, disaster planning and response capability, state rabies vaccine distribution, rabies survey testing as needed, and full county assistance by its environmental and nursing staff, health officer, and/ or county police. Fees will be charged to animal owners for animal housing and care in cases of eviction and court order, acceptance of other animals such as rabbits, owned animal drop off for adoption, reclaims of owned animals, municipal impoundment, any animal cruelty investigation when the municipality appoints shelter’s animal control by ordinance, and rabies specimen testing as requested by the municipality without known exposure. The fee to reclaim a cat or dog is $55 the first time, $80 the second time, and $105 the third time. The boarding fee is $5 per day, and rises to $10 starting on the eighth day. A rabies shot is $10 at the animal shelter, but Mahwah residents can obtain free rabies shots for their animals at the Franklin Lakes Animal Hospital or from Dr James French in Suffern, New York. The fee for dropping off owned dogs for adoption ranges from $25 for a puppy to $90 for an animal over 75 pounds. Owned dogs over six years old that are dropped off for adoption will require a fee ranging from $60 for a dog under 20 pounds to $90 for one over 50 pounds. The following drop off fees will also apply: $15 for owned kittens, $30 for owned cats and rabbits, and $10 for small owned animals. Euthanasia services for a dog under 20 pounds will be $60 up to $90 for a dog over 50 pounds, and the fee for euthanasia services for a cat will be $45. Owned animals that are dead on arrival will require a fee of $65 for a dog, $30 for a cat, $10 for small animals, and $30 for a rabbit. An animal cruelty investigation will cost $200. The Bergen County Animal Shelter is open to the public in excess of the state minimum of two hours a day and animal control is available to the township 24 hours a day seven days a week. Strays are accepted at the shelter regardless of whether they are brought in to the shelter facility by the animal control officer or the public. They may be dropped off any time during the hours the shelter is open to the public. Under the contract, the animal shelter will provide wildlife and pest control services on private property on a feefor service basis paid by the owner. But services beyond the scope of the capabilities or the animal control shelter will be referred to private vendors at the choice of the owner.
