Syder Scholarship Foundation announces winners
The Edward C. Syder Scholarship Foundation recently made its scholarship grants for the 2008-09 academic year to six Ramsey residents who exhibited excellence in both academics and community service. This year’s winners are: Jeffrey Berk, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia; Emily Dodwell, Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts; Emily Donelan, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Piscataway, New Jersey; Megan Gutierrez, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia; Nicholas Mellis, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York; and Jeffrey Hans Pankewicz, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. The six winners were selected from a field of more than 20 qualified applicants. Edward C. Syder, a long-time resident and community leader in Ramsey, passed away in 1991. His last will and testament directed the creation of a scholarship program which became the Edward C. Syder Scholarship Foundation. Donald C. Ohnegian, Esq., attorney for the foundation, stated that the foundation has awarded mare than $300,000 in scholarship monies since its creation in 1991. The winners are chosen by the selection board of the Edward C. Syder Scholarship Foundation, which consists of the following community and education leaders: Rev. Michael Carrier, First Presbyterian Church of Ramsey; Dr. Roy Montesano, Ramsey’s superintendent of schools; Donna Hellsten, Bank of America; John DaPuzzo, District Rotary representative; Hon. Christopher Botta, mayor of Ramsey; John Stanczak principal, Don Bosco High School; and Dr. Peter P. Mercer, president, Ramapo College.
LEPC
(continued from page 9) Ramsey OEM was also a full participant in the Memorial Day Parade, Ramsey Day and the Ramsey Run, the Centennial Parade and the “Home for the Holidays” festivities. Ramsey OEM assisted with most of the centennial events in 2008. Staff members of Ramsey continue to serve in leadership roles in the Ramsey Ambulance Corps and the Ramsey Rescue Squad. The Ramsey Office of Emergency Management meets the second Wednesday of the month at borough hall, in the emergency operations center, which is located in the lower level of the Ramsey Municipal Building. The State of New Jersey requires that every municipality appoint a Local Emergency Planning Committee, to consist of at least 12 individuals and to be comprised of five categories. Those five groupings are: elected officials, public safety, public health and public works officials, broadcast and print media officials, community groups, such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army, and representatives of public utilities. The LEPC is appointed by a resolution of the mayor and council, at the borough’s annual reorganization meeting.
