February 25, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 23 Mahwah Minutes Lent begins at Holy Cross The Lenten schedule at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, will begin Ash Wednesday Feb. 25, with a short prayer service with the imposition of ashes at 12:45 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. there will be a special Holy Communion Service with the Imposition of Ashes. This year’s theme for Lent is “By His Stripes: Healing Wounded Relationships.” Each Wednesday during the Lenten season, Feb. 25 until April 1, there will be a special Lenten Service with a contemporary drama and Holy Communion. All Season Chamber Players to perform The Mahwah Public Library will present the All Seasons Chamber Players “Bicentennial Bash: Felix Mendelssohn’s 200th Birthday” on Sunday, March 8 at 2 p.m. The program includes “Song without Words for Cello and Piano,” “Piano Trio No. 2 in C Minor,” Sammartini’s “Sonata in G Minor for Cello and Piano,” Gaubert- Medailles’ “Antiques for Flute and Piano,” and Suk’s “Piano Trio in C Minor.” All Seasons Chamber Players has performed over 400 concerts since it was founded in 1981. The ensemble performs music from the baroque to contemporary periods in mixed ensemble using flute, violin, cello, harpsichord, and piano. The group’s repertoire includes new and unusual works and those from the standard chamber music repertoire of duets, trios, quartets and four-hand piano works. March Bag Sale set The Clothing Closet Ministry of the Ramapo Reformed Church will hold its March Bag Sale on Saturday, March 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Select from a wide variety of clothing for adults and children. There is a good supply of sweaters, jeans, sneakers, boots, and shoes, blouses, sweatshirts, slacks, and more. Each bag is $3 with a free jacket or coat with every bag of clothes purchased, while supplies last. The Clothing Closet Ministry is located in the rear of the Education Building of the Ramapo Reformed Church on the corner of Island Road and West Ramapo Avenue. All proceeds from the sale benefit the ongoing ministry of the Ramapo Reformed Church. Shir Shalom Sisterhood hosts special auction Temple Beth Haverim Shir Shalom Sisterhood, 280 Ramapo Valley Road in Mahwah, will hold a special auction on Sunday, March 29 from 1 to 5 p.m. There is no entrance fee and refreshments will be served. This event will display beautifully gift wrapped baskets of donated merchandise and gift certificates. Some of the baskets have themes, such as jewelry, electronics, foods, chocolates, toys, and baby items. Prizes will include gift certificates for some of the finest area gourmet restaurants, casinos, and theaters. Nominations sought for Berrie Award Nominations for the 2009 Russ Berrie Award for Making a Difference will be accepted by The Russell Berrie Foundation through Feb. 27. New Jerseyans who have made a significant difference in their communities through a heroic effort or a lifetime of service are eligible for cash awards of up to $50,000. Established in 1996 by the late Russell Berrie, founder of Russ Berrie and Company, Inc., and Ramapo College of New Jersey, the awards honor “unsung heroes” from throughout the state. Up to 19 individuals will be recognized for making a significant difference in the well-being of their communities during the annual spring award ceremony at Ramapo College in Mahwah. The Russell Berrie Foundation will provide monetary awards of up to $50,000, $35,000, and $25,000, and runnerup grants of $2,500 each. Second Avenue comes to Ridge Road The Mahwah Public Library will bring “Yiddish Broadway: Tribute to Molly Picon and Fanny Brice” with soprano Sherry Zannoth and Inna Leytush on piano to the library on Sunday, March 1 at 2 p.m. New York City was once filled with Yiddish theaters and their stars. Two of the brightest stars were Molly Picon and Fanny Brice. The theaters closed but the songs lingered on. Songs in this program will include “Yiddisha Nightingale,” “Abi Gezunt,” “Yid’l “Mit’n Fid’l,” “Libe,” and “Oyg’n,” and others. Zannoth has a wide ranging repertoire in concert and opera. She has sung internationally, and has performed at the New York City Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, Cologne Opera, Opera de Columbia, Bremen Opera, and the Hong Kong Opera. This program is free. Saint Patrick’s Day celebration set The Grand Celebration of Saint Patrick will be held in the Church of the Immaculate Conception’s parish gym, 900 Darlington Avenue in Mahwah, on March 7. The West Milford Pipe Band will be the opening act at 7 p.m. sharp. Terry Feeley and his Band will provide traditional Irish tunes along with a vast assortment of pop and rock classics. Vocalist Jennifer Edwards will make a special guest appearance. Champion dancers from the Early- McLoughlin School of Irish Dance will perform the most cherished step numbers of the Emerald Isle.
