The National Merit Scholarship Program recently named Caitlin Smith and Kelsey Stober, Class of 2009 at Ramsey High School, Merit Finalists. Less than one percent of U.S. high school graduating seniors are eligible for this prestigious recognition. The process of selecting about 8,200 Merit Scholarship winners from more than 15,000 outstanding finalists is now underway. Each scholarship must be used for full-time attendance at an accredited college or university in the United States. Scholarship winners will be notified beginning in March. During their four years at Ramsey High School, Smith and Stober have excelled in the most rigorous and demanding courses the school offers, and are active participants in a wide variety of extracurricular activities. Award, and three years in a row were the recipients of the Ramsey High School Scholastic R award. They are members of the National Honor Society and the World Language Honor Society. In addition, Smith performs with the high school’s Concert Choir and Band Front including Velocity, the Winter Guard. Stober participates in the Enrichment Program and is a member of Mock Trial. On Jan. 19, at 9:55, Patrolman Hines observed a white box truck traveling Route 17 North. The vehicle’s tail lights were malfunctioning. During a motor vehicle stop, an odor of an alcoholic beverage was detected from the driver. At the conclusion of field sobriety tests, the driver, a 28-year-old Dumont man was arrested for driving while intoxicated. At 5:32 p.m. on Jan. 22, Patrolman Anthony Fiore was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Wyckoff Avenue. One driver had an odor of an alcoholic beverage and slurred speech. After field sobriety tests, the driver, a 59-year-old New City, New York man was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Patrolman Matt Rork observed a vehicle traveling below the speed limit on Lake Street on Jan. 25 at 9:41 p.m. The vehicle also had a malfunctioning tail light. driver. At the completion of field sobriety tests, the 51-year-old Mahwah driver was arrested for driving while intoxicated. On Feb. 2, Patrolman Adam Szelag observed a vehicle travel through a red light at the intersection of Main Street and North Central Avenue at 11:35 a.m. A motor vehicle stop was conducted and an odor of an alcoholic beverage was detected from the driver. At the conclusion of field sobriety tests, the 49-year-old Ramsey woman was arrested for driving while intoxicated. On Feb. 4 at 2 a.m., Patrolman Matt Rork observed a vehicle failing to maintain a lane of travel on Route 17 North. A motor vehicle stop was conducted and an odor of an alcoholic beverage was detected from the driver. At the conclusion of the field sobriety tests, the 22year-old Greenwood Lake, New York driver was arrested for driving while intoxicated.
