Mahwah February 11, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 3 Streets affected by Stage V sewer work will be repaved by Frank J. McMahon A professional services contract has been awarded by the Mahwah Township Council to Boswell McClave Engineering for that firm’s design engineering, inspection, and construction management services during the resurfacing of the roads that were excavated during the Stage V sanitary sewer project last year. As part of that sewer project, sanitary sewer mains and laterals were installed within the travel way of various roads in the township. A majority of the road repair work was completed in the fall of 2008, but the township let the trenches settle during the fall of 2008 and the winter of 2009 with the anticipation that the roads would be resurfaced in the spring of 2009. According to Stephen Boswell of Boswell Engineering, the roads included in this program will be repaired, reconstructed and resurfaced. Work will be done on Youngs Road, William Court, Fawn Hill Drive, Chapel Road, Deerfield Terrace, Madison Avenue, Monroe Drive, Byrne Drive, Bedford Road, and Kohout Drive. Boswell will prepare the roadway construction plans in accordance with current New Jersey Department of Transportation requirements and will prepare the specifications in accordance with NJDOT and the township’s requirements. The engineering firm will also prepare bid documents, advertise the project, review all contractor bids, and make a contract award recommendation to the township council. Once the contract is awarded, Boswell will coordinate and attend a pre-construction meeting with appropriate township officials, representatives of the utility companies, and other parties that will be affected by the construction activities. They will provide inspection services during the construction phase and review contractor invoices to submitted to the township. Boswell will also make a final inspection of the project improvements. The professional services agreement with Boswell Engineering calls for an estimated fee not to exceed $17,000. Boswell will perform the inspection and construction management services during the construction phases of this project for an estimated fee not to exceed $51,000, and the billing will be based on the hourly rates in effect at the time the work is performed. The council awarded a $2,900,000 contract to PM Contracting Inc of Hillside in July 2007, and the project was substantially completed late last summer. But, according to Mahwah Township Administrator Brian Campion, the substantial completion date of the project did not include the final paving of the roads where the sewer pipes had been installed because the trenches need time to settle before the final paving, and that settling usually takes up to six months after the trenches are closed. Officials break ground for public safety center Bergen County officials breaking ground for the new building. Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney announced the groundbreaking of a new Bergen County Public Safety Operations Center in Mahwah, located on the campus of the County’s Law and Public Safety Institute. The facility will house the County’s 911 Communications Center, the Office of Emergency Management, and the Emergency Operations Center bringing them into one building. “This sharing services initiative will help cut costs and create a state of the art facility that will allow emergency responders to perform their jobs in an efficient manner,” said McNerney. “With new equipment, additional space, and more resources, Bergen County will be better positioned to serve the public.” DMR Architects of Hasbrouck Heights is constructing the two-story, 30,000 square foot building.
