DVDs (continued from Restaurant page) of this TV classic, thought lost for decades. “The Exterminating Angel” (The Criterion Collection) is an example of a great filmmaker meeting “The Twilight Zone.” This was director Luis Bunuel’s first film after his internationally acclaimed “Viridiana.” A group of high-society friends are invited to a mansion for dinner and then find they cannot leave. Something, some unexplainable force is keeping them from going through the doorway to another room. There is no apparent rhyme or reason for their inability to leave, and that is what is so compelling. As days go by, the situation becomes more desperate. The police have assembled outside but they, too, appear immobile and unable to enter. The premise is simple, but Bunuel milks its possibilities as he escalates the surrealistic drama. The film’s restored, high-definition digital transfer looks terrific and is in keeping with Criterion’s high standard. The two-disc set includes a documentary on Bunuel, interviews with actress Silvia Pinal, and a booklet featuring an essay on the 1962 film and a 1970s interview with Bunuel. “Clint Eastwood: American Icon Collection” (Universal Studios Home Entertainment) is a box set containing four Eastwood feature films. In his directorial debut, “Play Misty for Me,” Eastwood stars as a radio DJ who becomes the victim of psychotic obsession when he tries to end a torrid affair with a fan (Jessica Walter) in a forerunner of “Fatal Attraction.” “The Eiger Sanction” is an action thriller about a professional assassin who is forced out of retirement to avenge a friend’s murder in the Swiss Alps. “Coogan’s Bluff” finds Eastwood as a soft-spoken, no-nonsense Arizona lawman whose unusual methods of capturing an escaped murderer cause havoc with a tough New York City police lieutenant (Lee J. Cobb). “The Beguiled” is a psychological thriller that combines love, betrayal, and hidden passions. Eastwood is a wounded Civil War soldier who finds shelter in an all-girls academy. In “The Beguiled,” Eastwood plays more of a sexual character (John McBurney). Geraldine Page plays the wary headmistress and Elizabeth Hartman is the teacher who falls in love with him. Director Don Siegel shifts the tone of the film to one of horror about midway through, incorporating a good deal of violence. The three-disc set includes many extras, including a featurette on the making of “Play Misty for Me,” a photo montage, production notes, and a featurette in which Eastwood and director Don Siegel discuss their five-film collaboration. Dennis Potter created several widely acclaimed British TV dramas, including “The Singing Detective” and “Pennies From Heaven.” “Dennis Potter: Three to Remember” (Koch Vision) is a box set featuring a trio of 1980 dramas produced by Potter for London Weekend Television. “Cream in My Coffee” tells the story of an elderly couple (Lionel Jeffries, Peggy Ashcroft) who return to the hotel where they began their affair in the early 1930s. “Blade on the Feather” stars Donald Pleasance as a reclusive, elderly author living a quiet life with his wife and daughter. The household is soon turned upside down when a young man (Tom Conti) proclaiming to be a longtime admirer shows up for a visit. Neither the author nor the admirer are really who they say they are, and a secret world of British espionage is revealed. In “Rain on the Roof,” a bored, sexually frustrated housewife (Cheryl Campbell) flirts with Billy, a mentally challenged young man, but her advances trigger aggressive behavior in Billy directed toward her philandering husband. The one extra in the three-disc set is the last interview with Potter, recorded three months before his death. Answer Last Week’s Puzzle Answer to to Last Week’s Puzzle
