First phase of Corporate Drive paving set for spring
by Frank J. McMahon The milling and repaving of a part of Corporate Drive on which the Mahwah Municipal Building is located is expected to be undertaken this spring. This first phase of the improvement to Corporate Drive was funded with a local aid grant in the amount of $150,000 and a contract for the project was awarded in September of 2008. The limits of this phase of the project extend from a point approximately 900 feet to the north of Macarthur Boulevard to a point approximately 1,100 feet farther north. The township has also received a $200,000 state aid grant for the second phase of the roadway improvement of Corporate Drive. Last month, the Mahwah Council approved a resolution authorizing Boswell McClave Engineering, the township’s engineering firm, to prepare roadway construction plans and specifications along with bid documents in order to advertise for bids for the project. Boswell will review the bids and recommend a contractor to the township, coordinate and attend a pre-construction meeting with the appropriate township officials, utility companies and other parties affected by the construction, and provide inspection services during the construction phase of the project. The township had requested $238,000 for this second phase of the project, however, so the limits of this phase of the project will be adjusted to reflect the amount received. Boswell will be paid a fee estimated not to exceed $13,000 for its design engineering services, and a fee not to exceed $26,000 for its inspection and construction management services. The project limits for the second phase of this resurfacing project will begin at the intersection of Corporate Drive and Macarthur Boulevard and proceed to the point where phase one began and proceed north for whatever distance can be covered by the grant money. The scope of the work in the second phase of this project includes the milling and resurfacing of the roadway and the reconstruction of the roadway base in several sections. In addition, castings will be reset and bicycle safe grates installed along with inlet curb pieces approved by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and traffic stripes. Corporate Drive extends from Macarthur Drive to Route 17 and it is the location of several corporate buildings and a hotel. The end of the roadway near Route 17 will be milled and repaved by the developer of the Robbie’s Music Barn property at the end of Corporate Drive where it intersects with Route 17. A 111-room Hampton Inn & Suites hotel has been approved for construction on the southern portion
of that site by the township’s planning board and the main entrance to that hotel will be on Corporate Drive. OTO Development, the developer of that property, has agreed to mill and repave about 415 feet of that portion of the roadway from curb to curb from Route 17 to the end of its property along Corporate Drive. The three-quarter mile roadway is the location of the township’s municipal building and senior center and several corporations and businesses including Stryker Orthopaedics, the Hilton Homeward Suites, the Ridgewood Corporation, Campmor Inc, the Alside Supply Center, RAD Data Communications, and the Seiko Corporation of America.
