Friends rally, raise funds in Kathleen Wild’s memory
When the American Cancer Society held its Relay for Life at Ramsey High School in 2008, Kathy Wild, an active member of the Ramsey Ambulance Corps who was battling leukemia, was not only a proud cancer survivor, but she was pleased to have her fellow members of the RAC supporting her and marching with her on the high school track. TEAM EMS, as the group was named, spent most of the night participating in the many activities that took place and raised a considerable amount of money to support cancer research and awareness. Wild lost her battle with leukemia the following October, and the entire ambulance corps attended the wake and funeral and provided an honor guard for her and her family. The EMTs also determined that the following year they would honor her memory at the 2009 Relay For Life. This past January, the name of the team was changed to TEAM WILD and Captains Mike Adams, Rich Van Der Wall, and Bill Lara were assigned the task of attending multiple planning sessions with the American Cancer Society and assuring that the team’s fundraising and participation would greatly eclipse the previous year’s effort. T-shirts, with the familiar Ramsey blue and gold were designed with Kathy’s EMS number -- 71 -- and the tribute, “Remembering by Moving Forward” emblazoned on the front. The goal of raising $2,000 was quickly surpassed and an ever-enlarging group of supporters signed up for a memorable night. “We kept increasing the order for T-shirts and we kept adding more tents to our site,” Adams explained, “and, fortunately, provisions of food kept arriving all night long.” TEAM WILD is looking forward to next year while remembering the great memories of Wild and this past relay.
A large contingent of Kathy Wild’s ambulance corps colleagues and other friends gathered at the Ramsey High School football field for an evening of fundraising, fun, and friendship.
