Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • August 12, 2009 Mahwah McKenna appointed to US Merchant Marine Academy Kathryn McKenna of Mahwah has been named to the US Merchant Marine Academy. She was nominated by Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), who recenlty met with the 2009 Military Academy appointees and their parents in his Newark office. The meeting, which takes place every year, is the culmination of months of work by Senator Menendez’s Constituent Services Staff, Senator Menendez, and a pool of 36 Military Academy Screeners -- volunteers with military experience that interview, screen the candidates, and review their submissions. Senators nominate 10 candidates to each of the four Military Academies: the Naval Academy, the Merchant Marines, the Air Force, and the US Military Academy at West Point. Senator Menendez makes the final decision as to which students are nominated. Once his nominees are submitted to the Military Academies, the institutions make the final decision. This year, 27 nominees out of the 40 submitted by Senator Menendez were appointed to U.S. Military Academies. After listening to Senator Menendez, the appointees and their families had the opportunity to meet with him privately in his office and take a photograph.
