Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • April 29, 2009 Mahwah Mahwah resident Jeffrey Akin, a fourth grade teacher at Allendale’s Brookside School, has been named 2009 Teacher of the Year through the Governor’s Teacher Recognition Program. He will be honored at the Annual Bergen County Governor’s Teacher Recognition Luncheon at the end of May. The school district noted that Akin, who is now in his eighth year of teaching in Allendale, has demonstrated extensive content knowledge and understanding of the interdisciplinary approach using Jeffrey Akin named Teacher of the Year effective, creative innovation and efficient instructional techniques. Akin was also recognized for increased student achievement of the core curriculum content standards through a learning-focused environment and has raised expectations for student achievement beyond grade level criteria. Akin is known for being an effective communicator with parents and students, and for establishing a productive classroom climate and rapport with the students. The Cornucopia Quintet featuring trumpet player Steve Badalamenti will bring the Big Band swing sound to the Mahwah Public Library on Sunday May 3 at 2 p.m. The Cornucopia Quintet plays American standards in the Big Band style including “My Funny Valentine,” “Moonlight in Vermont,” “Trumpeter’s Lullaby,” “Bye, Bye Blackbird,” and “It’s a Wonderful World.” Badalamenti was born in the Italian section on the west side of Brooklyn, New York known as Avenue U. At an early age, he was fascinated by the sound of musical instruments and Harry James was a miracle to his young ears. At 14, Badalamenti had his first trumpet lesson with his neighbor, “Professor” Joe Aiello. The teen used an old trumpet given to him by his cousin. Badalamenti brings swing to Mahwah Public Library In his senior year of high school, he was chosen to lead Lafayette High School’s swing band. After serving in the army during the Korean War as a band soloist, he enrolled under the GI bill at the Manhattan School of Music at the same time playing with various jazz groups and 17-piece orchestras. He can be heard on soundtrack recordings for the movie for HBO-TV, “Witch Hunt,” “Naked in New York,” and “Auto Focus” in addition to some product singles for radio and background solo work on a David Bowie recording. Badalamenti also enjoys giving private lessons. This concert is free. No tickets are necessary. Seats are on a “first come” basis. The Mahwah Public Library is located at 100 Ridge Road.
