Prompted by a failed assassination attempt on the President of the United States, investigative reporter Rachel Armstrong (Kate Beckinsale) discovers that a neighborhood woman is a CIA operative. Rachel believes she has happened upon the Big Story, and is backed by her editor (Angela Bassett), the newspaper’s legal counsel (Noah Wyle), and her First Amendment lawyer (Alan Alda). Federal prosecutor Patton Dubois (Matt Dillon) wants her to name her sources. She refuses, and is thrown in jail for contempt of court. She thinks she will soon be released, but as her incarceration lengthens, her relationships with husband (David Schwimmer) and son (Preston Bailey) start to deteriorate. Performances are first-rate in this tense political thriller. Beckinsale is sympathetic as the idealistic yet frightened reporter, but Dillon dazzles as the Javert-like Fed who will use anything and everything within his power to break the reporter’s will. The changing relationship between Rachel and her family gives the film humanity and elevates it from a mere “ripped from the headlines” flick to one of depth. Extras include deleted scenes, a making-of featurette, and filmmakers’ commentary. “What Doesn’t Kill You” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) is reminiscent of episodic gangster pictures, such as “Goodfellas” and “Once Upon a Time in America.” It is an autobiographical take on the life and experiences of director Brian Goodman, who was a petty criminal and drug addict as well as a family man. From an early age, Brian (Mark Ruffalo) and Paulie (Ethan Hawke) do jobs for crime boss Pat Kelly. With no way to support a growing family, Brian sinks deeper and deeper into the world of crime until he is given the opportunity to participate in the biggest robbery of his life. The film’s Boston setting is reminiscent of “The Departed,” but Goodman’s film is far more modest and less complex. The best thing about “What Doesn’t Kill You” is Ruffalo, who has done consistently good work in excellent, mediocre, and weak films through the years. Here, he has a meaty role and makes Brian a multifaceted character. His Brian is torn between the dishonest world of fast bucks and his responsibility to a wife and child. The film is raw and captures the desperation of the streets. Considering it does not boast A-list stars, a top director, or large budget, the film is an admirable achievement. Extras include deleted scenes, commentary, and a making-of featurette. “While She Was Out” (Anchor Bay) is a predictable spin on the vigilante thriller. Della (Kim Basinger) lives in a gated community and is a devoted mom married to an abusive, former jock (Craig Sheffer). She has the appearance of a delicate creature, incapable of inflicting harm on others, but that changes after she is accosted by a gang of thugs while doing some last-minute Christmas shopping. Their leader, Chuckie (Lukas Haas), is clearly a sociopath itching to cause some serious pain. Della must defend herself and improvises with garage tools and ingenuity. Basinger is good and elicits a degree of sympathy, but when things start looking awfully familiar, that sympathy dissipates. The film is rated R. Extras include audio commentary with writer/director Susan Montford, a making-of featurette, and theatrical trailer. “Mission: Impossible: The Sixth TV Season” (Paramount Home Entertainment) is a six-disc box set featuring all 22 episodes from the 1971-72 season. Known for its jazzy theme by Lalo Schifrin, this series ran from 1966 to 1990, one of the longest runs for a TV drama. The formula remained essentially the same throughout, though there were cast changes through the years. At the beginning of each show, the leader of the Impossible Missions Force, a group of highly trained government agents, receives a taperecorded message outlining instructions for an assignment. The rest of the program shows how the team plans, sets the stage with intricate, covert preparations, and executes the project. Plans generally include assuming identities, makeup and disguises, rigging equipment, and plain old guts. Risk is always present. Discovery will mean failure and possibly death, so teamwork is essential. The team consists of leader Jim Phelps (Peter Graves), electronics wizard Barney Collier (Greg Morris), muscle man Willie Armitage (Peter Lupus), and makeup artist Casey (Lynda Day George). During the sixth season, Jim and his team focus primarily on targets outside the reach of conventional law enforcement agencies and bring master criminals, corrupt politicians, and syndicate bosses to justice.
