Page 18 THE VILLADOM TIMES II & IV • April 22, 2009 New DVD releases (continued from Restaurant page) Texas town of Anarene during the 1950s. Based on a Larry McMurtry novel, it takes place on the eve of the Korean War. Sam the Lion (Ben Johnson) owns the diner, the pool hall, and the Royal Theater, the only forms of recreation in town. Sonny Crawford (Timothy Bottoms) and Duane Jackson (Jeff Bridges) are co-captains of the local football team. Johnson and Cloris Leachman both won Supporting Actor Oscars, and the film features many actors who went on to major film careers, including Cybill Shepherd, Ellen Burstyn, and Randy Quaid. The soundtrack is filled with ‘50s pop music by Tony Bennett, Jo Stafford, Eddie Fisher, Johnny Ray, and Hank Snow. “Nickelodeon” is about the early days of filmmaking, a topic director/film historian Bogdanovich knows something about. The plot is slight, and concerns pioneer movie men trying to make a picture against assorted obstacles. The director uses slapstick, a style common in early comedies, but the movie is too long and fizzles well before the final fade-out. Burt Reynolds, Ryan O’Neal and Tatum O’Neal star. Extras include commentary by Bogdanovich and a look-back featurette on “Picture Show.” “Sin City” (Dimension Home Video), based on a popular series of graphic novels, captures the signature comic book style of creator Frank Miller, which involves black and white images with highlights of color for dramatic effect, extreme violence, brutality, misogyny, and torture. Miller does not pull his punches. Even Superman and Batman would wince at the parameters Miller has widened in the field of comic art. “Sin City” is co-directed by Miller, Robert Rodriguez, and Quentin Tarentino. Its cast includes Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Benicio Del Toro, Clive Owen, Mickey Rourke, Brittany Murphy, Nick Stahl, Powers Boothe, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Carla Gugino. Basin City, the “sin city” of the title, is an extension of hell where the underbelly of society flourishes. The police are either ineffective or corrupt, heavily-armed prostitutes rule their own red light district, and shootings and murders occur with the frequency of flashing neon. The two-disc Blu-ray edition contains both the theatrical and a recut, extended, unrated version. There are a slew of extras to make fans of Miller’s creation happy. Of the modern era movie monsters, Pinhead from the “Hellraiser” films must rank with Freddy Krueger and Jason as horror icons. “The Hellraiser Limited Edition Box Set” (Anchor Bay) contains both 20th Anniversary DVD special editions of “Hellraiser” and “Hellbound: Hellraiser II,” as well as the brand new Blu-ray version of the original “Hellraiser.” The fun of this set is that it comes packaged in a plastic Chinese puzzle box, replicating the famous box from which the horrors of “Hellraiser” emerge. These horrors are the Cenobites, a collection of frightening sadists who dote on ripped flesh, flayed muscle, and pulsating viscera. “Hellraiser” was the directorial debut of Clive Barker, who manages to create an atmosphere of relentless, undiluted dread. Images are gruesome, courtesy of remarkable special effects. Extras include audio commentaries, vintage featurettes, trailers, and assorted treats for “Hellraiser” fans. “A Galaxy Far Far Away” (Cinevolve) is a documentary about the fan craze surrounding the motion picture “Star Wars.” In 1999, as the country eagerly anticipated the release of “Episode I: The Phantom Menace,” director Tariq Jalil decided to explore why “Star Wars” strikes such a mysterious and powerful chord across all races, genders, and generations. The DVD features interviews with hundreds of fans, movie executives, and high-profile celebrities. Jalil brings his camera to “Star Wars” conventions, nationwide premieres, the homes of dedicated collectors who show off their treasures, and on the lines to interview those who spent 42 days just to be among the first to see “The Phantom Menace.” Interviews and archival footage include Samuel L. Jackson, Joe Pesci, Roger Corman, Meat Loaf, Andy Garcia, Jimmy Kimmel, and “Star Wars” alumni David Prowse (Darth Vader), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Kenny Baker (R2-D2), and Anthony Daniels (C3-PO). Most amazing is the devotion of so many folks from average walks of life.
