Dr. Sidney Hassenfeld, a health fitness specialist and instructor in exercise science at Bergen Community College, recently attended the annual National Research Conference sponsored by the American College Sports Medicine and held at the C.N.N. Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Hassenfeld reports that great strides have been made in the understanding and implementation of exercise as a tool to help those individuals who suffer from chronic diseases, including osteoporosis, diabetes, and arthritis, to become fit and lead normal and active lives. General, declared that exercise is medicine. If done properly, and regularly, exercise reduces stress, lowers high blood pressure, strengthens muscles and bones, and generally improves quality of life. In the past, exercise was geared toward the young and healthy. New forms of exercise have been developed which enable seniors and those with medical issues to not only exist, but to flourish. The surgeon general recommends people walk briskly for 30 minutes on a daily basis and engage in strength and endurance exercise at least twice a week.
