School board candidates get ready for election
by Frank J. McMahon This year’s Mahwah Board of Education election involves three three-year seats and one contested seat for an unexpired two-year term. Incumbents Christine P. Davis, John F. Dolan, and Candace Larson are running unopposed in this election, but incumbent Prema C. Moorthy, who was appointed to a seat in January to replace Denise Heitman, is seeking election to fill out her unexpired term. She is being opposed by Peter J. Wendrychowicz who had served on the board for 21 years, but lost his seat in the 2007 election. Moorthy has lived in Mahwah for 17 years and has served on the board since January when she was appointed by the current board. She has two children in elementary school and serves on the board’s Policy Committee. A clinical psychologist, she is a consultant performing forensic evaluations for family court in Westchester County, primarily custody/visitation, delinquency, abuse/ neglect, and competency evaluations. She is employed at a non-profit agency called Westchester Jewish Community Services. Moorthy attended James Wood High School in Virginia and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1986. She received a BA in psychology/religious studies in 1990 from the Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, and she completed her M.A. degree while pursuing her Ph.D in clinical psychology which she received in 1997. A member of the Mahwah Schools Foundation she has been the co-chairwoman of the Mahwah 10K/5K/2K runs from 2005 to 2009. She has also been the chairperson of various Home & School Organization committees at the George Washington and Joyce Kilmer elementary schools including the Fall/Spring Book Fair and Science Day. Wendrychowicz is a retired track and field coach at Suffern High School where he was the library media specialist from 1968 to 2004. Prior to that, he was the elementary school librarian for the Mahwah schools. He is a graduate of King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where he received a B.A. in English with a history minor. He also graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York with honors and a master’s degree in library and information science. He has 39 years of experience in education and he was previously the school board’s president during two of his terms. Davis has lived in the township for 15 years and holds a BS in biology from Ramapo College. She has two children. Now seeking her third term, she has served on the board’s Finance, Facilities, Public Relations, and Executive/Planning committees. She is also liaison to the Thunderbird Scholarship Committee and to the Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools. She has been president and vice president of several home and school organizations, and she has been a religious education teacher at the
Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Currently, she is a science teacher in the Ramsey public schools. Dolan currently serves on the school board’s Finance, Facilities, and Executive/Planning committees. He is a long term member of the board, having been appointed in October 1991 and elected in 1992 to serve out an unexpired term. He was elected again in 2000 and has since served three consecutive terms. He is now seeking a fifth term. Larson has lived in Mahwah since 1994 and has served on the school board since 1997. She has three sons. She is a sales associate with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Wyckoff. She has a B.A. in philosophy and graduated magna cum laude from Saint Bonaventure University in 1980. Larson graduated from Pace University School of Law in 1985 and was admitted to NJ Bar the same year. She has held several positions on the school board, including first and second vice president. She has served as the George Washington School HSO President, held various positions in the George Washington, Joyce Kilmer, and Ramapo Ridge Home & School Organizations, and was a Mahwah Youth Sports Recreation Coach. She was also a religious education teacher at Immaculate Conception Church from 1997 to 2008.
