Elizabeth meets such a man, Fitzwilliam Darcy (Colin Firth), at a local ball, but he is arrogant and rude and there is instant mutual distaste. Firth ranks as one of the better screen Darcys, a group that includes Laurence Olivier. Ehle is very good as Elizabeth Bennett. There is very little action, so the story tends to bog down and the concerns of the characters can wear thin, but the production is lavish, with outdoor scenes and period costumes often stealing the spotlight, and a cast of accomplished British actors give the miniseries the proper authenticity. There are several extras in this two-disc Blu-ray edition, including a making-of featurette and a look at the adaptation from novel to screen. “Vampire Secrets” (New Video) is a timely documentary in light of two recent theatrical films based on the vampire: “Twilight” and “Let the Right One In.” The documentary shows how history, nature, literature, cinema, and legend combined to produce the concept of the vampire, a creature of the undead who survives on the blood of human beings. The 1897 Bram Stoker novel “Dracula” is cited as a major influence in the popularity of the vampire character. The aristocratic Count Dracula requires a human slave to look after his coffin and protect him from exposure to daylight. He leaves his Transylvanian castle to journey to London, its dense population an ideal feeding ground. But the documentary goes further, uncovering the ancient folkloric origins of blood-craving creatures from beyond the grave. The vampire myth is traced to Eastern Europe and back to the ancient cultures of Greece and China. Profusely illustrated with art and footage of actual locations, “Vampire Secrets” is a treat for anyone who ever shuddered watching a vampire flick. DVDs (continued from Restaurant page) fairy tales incorporating Disney stars like Mickey Mouse and Goofy. The studio has just released three collections of these short cartoons in its Animation Collection series. “Mickey and the Beanstalk” (Disney) is the best segment from the feature compilation “Fun and Fancy Free” (1947). It is the Disney take on the “Jack and the Beanstalk” tale, with Mickey Mouse standing in as Jack. Exquisite animation characterizes this adventure, as the beanstalk’s vines twist and grow and slink about while Mickey attempts to grapple a singing harp from a giant. “Thru the Mirror” (1936) is a splendidly surreal take on Lewis Carroll’s Alice stories. Surrealism was wholeheartedly embraced by Disney’s competitors, the Fleischer Brothers, but was uncommon at Disney. This cartoon is the exception, as Mickey is accosted by an angry umbrella, King Neptune emerges from the ocean on a globe, and playing cards dance in a Busby Berkeley-inspired extravaganza. Other titles in the series are “Three Little Pigs” (featuring the Depression-era anthem, ‘Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?’”) and “The Prince and the Pauper,” a collection of fairy tales as re-imagined by the Disney team. “Pride and Prejudice” (A & E Home Entertainment), the 1996 BBC TV five-hour mini-series starring Colin Firth, is the most faithful screen adaptation of the Jane Austen novel. Elizabeth Bennett (Jennifer Ehle) is a strong-willed, sensible young woman whose father is a gentleman with a modest estate, but the family suffers in status because of an uncle who works as a businessman Answer to Last Week’s Puzzle Answer to Last Week’s Puzzle
