The church will happily accept tax-deductible contributions of gently used furniture, toys, bikes, lawn equipment, appliances, baby items, books, and other household goods. Items can be dropped off at the church, 37 East Allendale Avenue, between Monday April 27 and Wednesday, April 29. Limited pickup service is available. Small business workshop offered ScoreBergen, the Bergen Chapter of SCORE, will hold a new workshop for small business owners who are struggling to keep their heads above water. “Tools for Surviving a Recession,” will take place April 7 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at IKEA’s Paramus store at the junction of Routes 4 and 17. Cost for the workshop is $20 for attendees who register in advance, or $25 at the door. Additional participants in the same party pay $10 each. April films feature Oscar winners Waldwick Public Library hosts screenings of classic films of the past on Thursdays at 2 p.m. A brief introduction, setting the film in its historical context, will precede each screening. The theme for the month of April is Best Picture Oscar winners, and the schedule of screenings is as follows: April 16, “How Green Was My Valley?” (1941); April 23, “From Here to Eternity” (1953); and April 30, “Marty” (1955). Elmwood Park High Class of 1974 plans reunion The committee organizing the 35-year reunion of Elmwood Park Memorial High School’s Class of 1974 is seeking classmates living in Northwest Bergen County. DAR offers program on Eleanor Roosevelt The Saddle River Chapter D.A.R. will present “Eleanor Roosevelt: A New Woman” on Monday, April 27 at 1:15 p.m. at the Midland Park Memorial Library. The public is invited to this free event, which features Rene Goodwin of the American Historical Theater, a non-profit organization specializing in first-person living history presentations. Roosevelt grew from an ungainly, unloved young woman to become the US representative to the United Nations. This is the story of her emotionally difficult upbringing, her marriage to a fanatically ambitious man, and her unwavering support during his illness. The program is offered through the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Employment workshop scheduled Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church’s Career Resources Ministry, in its continuing effort to provide help to people seeking employment, will be presenting the third of a fourpart series of its winter/spring workshops on Sunday, April 19 at noon. The workshop will be held in the meeting room located in the lower church and is open to anyone seeking employment and those who anticipate possible unemployment. Parish membership is not a required. These workshops are presented by the Career Resources Ministry whose members are dedicated to helping people who are seeking employment. Professionals in the field will Inaugural event Recently, the Ho-Ho-Kus campus of ECLC of NJ held its first fundraiser at The Tides in North Haledon. Over 225 guests attended and many went home with wonderful prizes. The event was co-chaired by Cynthia D’Amico and Cheryl Avino (pictured) both ECLC staff members from Waldwick. All the money raised goes to the ECLC Foundation, which provides subsidies for after school programs, respites, PRIDE, the adult day program, and CPS the supportive employment services. ECLC of NJ is an approved nonprofit organization providing education services for over 600 children and young adults with severe learning, language and other developmental disabilities, including neurological and cognitive impairments and the autistic spectrum. present the workshop and will be on hand to give advice. The church is located at 1 Passaic Street in Ridgewood. ‘Getting a Handle on ADHD’ set The Valley Hospital Department of Community Health will host a free educational program entitled “Getting a Handle on ADHD” on Thursday, April 23, at 7 p.m. in The Valley Hospital Conference Center, 223 North Van Dien Avenue in Ridgewood. An estimated three to five percent of children in the United States have Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Children with ADHD have trouble controlling their behavior, concentrating on tasks, planning ahead, or sitting still for more than a few minutes. Lisa Nalven, M.D., M.A., director of developmental pediatrics, and Debra CouturierFagan, Ph.D., developmental psychologist at Valley Hospital will present the information on the different types of ADHD: hyperactive vs. inattentive. There will also be discussion of diagnosis and treatment, and home, school, and social issues associated with this disorder. Registration is required. VFW, American Legion hold joint recruitment The members of the Washington Elm Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 192 (Ho-Ho-Kus/Ridgewood) in Ho-HoKus and the American Legion’s Ridgewood Post 53 in Ridgewood will conduct a joint recruiting event, weather permitting, on April 18 and 25. On April 25, the two groups will be at the Ho-Ho-Kus Post Office from 9 a.m. until approximately 1 p.m. On April 18, the groups will be at Daily Treat Restaurant in Ridgewood from 9 a.m. until approximately 5 p.m. These two organizations principally cover Ridgewood, Ho-Ho-Kus, Saddle River, and Upper Saddle River. The Washington Elm VFW Post 192 with its 89 members was chartered in 1939. The American Legion’s Ridgewood Post 53 with its 97 members was chartered in 1919.
