Memorial service planned Allendale will commemorate the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack with a special candlelight ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial at the upper pond at Crestwood Park. This ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11. Participants are asked to bring a candle. Box Tops fundraiser launched Hillside and Brookside schools have launched the district’s 2009-10 Box Tops for Education fundraising campaign. Residents are asked to clip designated box tops from hundreds of favorite products and send them to Hillside School, Attention Maria Aiello, Box Tops Coordinator, 89 Hillside Avenue, Allendale, NJ, 07401. Participants may sign up to support Hillside and Brookside schools on the Box Tops website at www.btfe.com. The schools earn a percentage of participants’ purchases when they shop through the Box Tops MarketplaceSM. Schools can also earn a percentage of books purchased through the Box Tops Reading RoomSM. Box Tops for Education is a school fundraising program started by General Mills in 1996. To date, Box Tops has helped America’s schools raise over $250 million to buy items they need but cannot always afford, such as library books, school supplies, and playground equipment. The program offers school supporters three easy ways to earn cash for schools through everyday activities such as buying groceries, shopping online, and purchasing books. Fell House shopping benefit set Concerned Citizens of Allendale has partnered with Macy’s Shop for a Cause to raise funds to benefit the Fell House. Participants purchase a $5 shopping pass (some exclusions apply) for exclusive savings and special offers in every Macy’s store on Saturday, Oct. 17. As a participating charity, the Concerned Citizens of Allendale keeps 100
percent of the proceeds for the sale of each pass. Plus, ticket holders can enter to win a $500 Macy’s gift card. Clothes Line Thrift Shop reopens The Clothes Line Thrift Shop in Allendale will reopen Wednesday, Sept. 9. A breakfast of bagels and coffee will be served as shoppers look through the new fall clothing. Allendale town-wide garage sale set The Allendale Woman’s Club is holding its Sixth Annual Town-Wide Garage Sale, featuring over 70 participating homes on Saturday, Sept. 26 and Sunday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 pm. Allendale Festival Day set The Allendale Chamber of Commerce will again be hosting its Annual Festival Day on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. West Allendale Avenue will become a walking mall for families to enjoy the day with vendor craft tables, food, giveaways, live music for all ages, children’s entertainment, games, community organizations, exhibits, temporary tattoos, petting zoo, moonwalk, pumpkin painting, clowns,

Summer reading program begins The “Four Towns, Three Months, Two Books, One Hot Topic” summer reading program is about to begin. Over 1,000 individuals voted on this summer’s selections for the topic “Child Soldiers of Africa.” The fiction selection is “What is the What” by Dave Eggers and the non-fiction choice is “A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier” by Ishmael Beah. The program will wrap up with an evening event planned for Wednesday, Sept. 30 at Northern Highlands. The evening will include book discussions, performances, speakers, and accounts of their journey from the students going on the summer trip to Tanzania. Cub Scout registration underway Open registration for Allendale Cub Scouts is now underway for 2009-10. All boys living in Allendale who are in grades one through five are eligible to join. Scouting provides a fun environment where boys can develop character, learn values, and gain self-confidence while embarking on exciting adventures.
