Forty-two New Jersey chapters of PEO (the Philanthropic Education Organization) recently designed a quilt to honor New Jersey State President Marcia McLaughlin, and their efforts earned them second prize in the group category of the State Quilt Guild Show. Mc Laughlin, a Ho-Ho-Kus resident, was elected president of the New Jersey State Chapter of PEO last year, and members of her local Chapter J wanted to honor her with a special gift. McLaughlin is a passionate collector of samplers and a talented fiber artist, so Chapter J challenged the other chapters throughout the state to contribute a quilt square. A fabric and colors were chosen. A pre-cut square of fabric and instructions were then sent to each chapter with the request that they create a piece representing their chapter. The response was overwhelming. Within three months, 40 quilt squares were returned with stitches and patterns, one more imaginative, elaborate, and beautiful than the next. No two were even remotely alike, yet each adhered PEO creation wins prize at State Quilt Guild Show to the theme of love and PEO sisterhood. The finished quilt was presented to McLaughlin at the annual PEO State Convention. On seeing the finished masterpiece, Denise Trend, the owner of the Cozy Quilt Shop in River Edge, suggested that it be exhibited at the State Quilt Guild Show in Edison. Her suggestion was followed, and the quilt earned a red ribbon at the Edison event. PEO is an international organization with over 6,000 chapter members throughout the United States and Canada. Founded at Iowan College in 1869 by seven spirited young women, it is a philanthropic and educational organization promoting and supporting educational opportunities for women. As PEO is celebrating its 140th anniversary, it celebrates having assisted 77,800 women with grants, loans and scholarships through five educational projects. The support through the projects totals more than $182 million.
