Upper Saddle River November 25, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 District activates green energy system at ‘Solarbration’ The Upper Saddle River school district hosted a “Solarbration” last week, marking the date Cavallini Middle School officially began using its new solar energy collection system. District officials including Superintendent Dr. Monica Browne and USR Board of Education President Peter Koski were joined by Mayor Kenneth Gabbert, Bergen County Superintendent Dr. Aaron Graham, Senator Gerald Cardinale, Assemblyman John Rooney, Assemblywoman Charlotte Vandervalk, students, and staff members at this special event. Students performed “Solarbration,” a song based on “Celebration,” and dignitaries flipped a festive ceremonial switch that lit up and shot confetti into the room. “We are now collecting solar energy daily,” Dr. Browne said the morning after the event. “It’s great for the environment, and the students and teachers will be working with the data as part of the math and science curriculum.” Students, and other interested individuals, are invited to visit the Cavallini School website http://www.usronline.org/ cavallini/cavalliniIndex.asp, where they can monitor the energy produced by the new roof-based solar collection system. Dr. Browne said students will be asked to compare energy collection under different weather conditions and in various seasons. The solar voltaic cells will collect energy even when it is cloudy, and can still work with snow cover of up to two inches, the superintendent reported. The solar cells are guaranteed for 20 years.
