Calvary Lutheran holds Advent Craft Workshop Calvary Lutheran Church and Christian Nursery School will hold its annual Advent Craft Workshop on Sunday, Dec. 6 from 3 to 5 p.m. All are invited to share in this family event. No reservations are needed. Calvary is located at 165 West Crescent Avenue, Allendale. Volunteers will offer many crafts projects from which to choose. There will be Christmas music, refreshments, and activities. Again this year, a “special visitor from the North Pole” will be on hand for photos. Crafts will range in cost from 75 cents to $1 each. Christmas music offered at Ridgewood UMC The Ridgewood United Methodist Church is sponsoring a concert of music for Christmas on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. James A. Wynne will direct “The Christmas Story in Anthems and Carols” along with the Ridgewood UMC Chancel Choir and the Jefferson Township High School Chamber Choir. There is no admission charge, but a freewill donation will be taken. The Ridgewood United Methodist Church is located at 100 Dayton Street, Ridgewood. Sunday worship service and Sunday school begin at 9:45 a.m. The Children’s Choir meets on Sundays at 11 a.m. and the Family Bell Choir at 11:30 a.m. The Youth Group meets Sunday evenings at 6 p.m. Call the church at (201) 652-2868. Family Havdalah musical celebration planned A musical Havdalah Celebration is planned for the whole family at 7 p.m. on Saturday night, Dec. 5 at Temple Israel in Ridgewood. There will be singing for young children and their parents, jazz standards performed by Cantor Caitlin Bromberg, and a sing-along, followed by dancing to recorded music. Admission is free, and all members of the community, especially prospective members, are welcome. Light refreshments will be served. Havdalah is a Jewish religious ceremony that marks the symbolic end of Shabbat at nightfall on Saturday. On completion of Shabbat, spices, often stored in a decorative container, are handed around so everyone can smell the fragrance. Located at 475 Grove Street in Ridgewood, Temple Israel and JCC is an egalitarian Conservative synagogue with members from many Bergen County communities. West Side hosts book fair, fundraiser West Side Nursery School, 6 South Monroe Street in
Ridgewood, is hosting its annual book fair, featuring highquality Scholastic books and CDs. The fair will take place Tuesday, Dec. 1 through Thursday, Dec. 3 in the West Side Presbyterian Church narthex. The event also will include a special fundraiser with a wide range of prizes, from gift baskets and gift certificates to children’s parties and personal services. Thanksgiving Eve interfaith service set The religious communities of Glen Rock will hold a Thanksgiving Eve Interfaith Service on Wednesday, Nov. 25 at the Glen Rock Jewish Center, 682 Harristown Road, at 8 p.m. The community is invited to this one-hour participatory service. There will be fellowship and refreshments afterwards. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to help families in need. Monetary donations are also welcome. OLMC MOMS plan Advent Dinner, caroling OLMC MOMs will host its annual Advent Dinner on Sunday, Nov. 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Mount Carmel Parish Center on Passaic Street, Ridgewood. In addition to sharing a pot luck meal, each family will make an Advent wreath and children will have the opportunity to make crafts and decorate cookies. Presbyterian church offers Advent liturgies Special liturgies will be presented each Sunday during Advent at The Presbyterian Church at Franklin Lakes. Services are held every Sunday at 10 a.m. with hospitality following at 11 a.m. The annual candlelight Christmas Eve service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 24 at 8 p.m. led by the Rev. Vern Dethmers. All are welcome to come for a meaningful worship experience to celebrate the season. The church is at 730 Franklin Lake Road, Franklin Lakes.
Rabbi Fine to lead Temple Israel Rabbi David J. Fine will be installed as the spiritual leader of Temple Israel and Jewish Community Center of Ridgewood on Sunday, Dec. 6 at the 7 p.m. Ma’ariv service. Following a musical introduction, Cantor Caitlin Bromberg and Rabbi Sharon Litwin will lead the service. Rabbi Fine will be formally installed by his father, Rabbi Robert E. Fine. The keynote address will be delivered by Rabbi Joel Roth, the Louis Finkelstein Professor of Talmud and Jewish

Law at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Rabbi Roth has been a member of the Jewish Theological Seminary faculty since his ordination in 1968, and has also served as Dean of its Rabbinical School. An expert in Halakhah, he served on the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards from 1978 to 2006, including eight years as its Chair. Rabbi Roth is also a Rosh Yeshiva at the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem. A reception will follow the installation. Admission is free and all are welcome.
