Page 24 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • November 18, 2009 DVDs (continued from Restaurant page) female stars. This five-disc Blu-ray edition contains numerous extras: a 20-page reproduction of the original, complete 1939 souvenir program; 40-page book with photos and production notes; eight art prints; a CD soundtrack sampler; “The Making of a Legend” documentary, narrated by Christopher Plummer; a featurette on the film’s restoration; a 1939 newsreel showing the Atlanta premiere; the international prologue; foreign language sample scenes; cameo portraits of cast members; the 2004 documentary “Melanie Remembers: Reflections by Olivia de Havilland;” “Moviola: The Scarlett O’Hara Wars,” a 1980 TV special never before on home video; and the full-length documentary “1939: Hollywood’s Greatest Year.” This lush set honors with great style one of the most famous and revered motion pictures of all time. The Three Stooges, one of the most popular screen comedy teams of the 20th century, influenced generations of comics who succeeded them. Starting out in vaudeville, the trio began their film career in the early 1930s, reached their peak at Columbia Pictures from 1934 through 1957, lasted as a team into the early 1960s, and were rediscovered by an enthusiastic new generation through the medium of television. “The Three Stooges Collection, Volume 7: 19521954” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) is a two-disc set containing 22 digitally re-mastered shorts arranged chronologically. Nine of the shorts make their widescreen DVD debut and two are in 3-D. These shorts were made during a period that saw many changes in the act. In 1952, Curly succumbed to the effects of an earlier stroke and died at age 48. Shemp was at his funniest. Unfortunately, budget cutbacks at Columbia Pictures forced director Jules White to recycle some old footage. Several shorts are just re-titled remakes. The Stooges’ only 3-D shorts, “Spooks!” and “Pardon My Backfire,” were made in 1953, the peak of Hollywood’s newest but short-lived fad. Other highlights in the collection are “Shot in the Frontier” (1954), a parody of the classic “High Noon,” and “Cuckoo on a Choo Choo” (1952), with Larry’s hilarious impression of Marlon Brando. In “Goof on the Roof” (1952), the Stooges attempt with wonderful inepti- tude to hook up an antenna to their friend’s TV set. With augmented sound effects for the assorted pokes in the eye, smacks, kicks, and bops on the head, these shorts require just the hint of a plot so the Stooges can create their special brand of slapstick madness. “How to Be” (IFC Films) stars Robert Pattinson as Art, an aspiring musician. Stuck in a dead-end supermarket job and having recently been dumped by his girlfriend, he is forced to move back with his emotionally distant parents. Art is depressed until he discovers the best-selling self-help book “It’s Not Your Fault” and spends his inheritance to hire the book’s eccentric author as his live-in life coach to get him through his “quarter-life crisis” and help him be “more normal.” This small, independent 2008 British film would probably have faded away by now if its star had not become a sensation as sexy vampire Edward Cullen in “Twilight.” In “How to Be,” he turns in a pleasant, if unexciting, performance and delivers pop-rock original songs and classics by such artists as The Roches and Captain Beefheart. Oliver Irving’s direction is uninspired, with several scenes lumbering along without a dramatic point. Rebecca Pidgeon is very good as Art’s mother. Special features include a making-of documentary, an interview with and audition footage of Pattinson, and audio commentary. Four collections from MGM Home Entertainment salute the work of Sean Connery, Mickey Rourke, Reese Witherspoon, and Jack Lemmon. “The Jack Lemmon Collection” contains the great “Some Like it Hot” and “The Apartment,” but also the tepid comedies “Avanti!” and “How to Murder Your Wife.” The Connery collection has his return to the role of James Bond, “Never Say Never Again,” and the war drama “A Bridge Too Far,” along with the fairly routine “Shalako,” a western, and “Cuba,” which takes place during political upheaval in that country. The Rourke collection’s best film is “The Pope of Greenwich Village,” set in New York’s Little Italy and co-starring a scene-stealing Eric Roberts. Rourke plays a smooth-talking hustler who tries to raise money for a restaurant by crossing the Mafia. The other films in the Rourke collection are “Desperate Hours,” “Prayer for the Dying,” and “Harley Davidson & the Marlboro Man.” “The Reese Witherspoon Collection” has her two “Legally Blonde” films plus “The Man in the Moon,” a dramatic coming-of-age film directed by Robert Mulligan, and “S.F.W.,” about an alienated teenager (Stephen Dorff) who gains unwanted celebrity after being taken hostage by terrorists.
