Ho-Ho-Kus November 11, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 9 Municipal court ordinance to be updated; deputy hired by Jennifer Crusco A new ordinance that was recently introduced by the Ho-Ho-Kus Council would, if adopted on Nov. 24, update the borough code as it pertains to the municipal court. In an interview with Villadom TIMES, Ho-Ho-Kus’ Certified Municipal Court Administrator Rosemarie Novelli-Salyer reported that the present section of the borough’s code is antiquated and has not been amended for 20 years. The proposed updates, she added, would provide uniformity between the state and local codes. Among the changes proposed in the new ordinance is an increase in the fee for the public defender. In an effort to bring the local code up to the state statute, the public defender’s fee would start at $50 and increase to a maximum of $200. Novelli-Salyer said it is possible to have the fee waived if the defendant is indigent. The new ordinance would also change the term magistrate to judge, and the term court clerk to administrator. Novelli-Salyer noted that non-gender specific language is also part of the proposed amendments. Novelli-Salyer has been the administrator in Ho-Ho-Kus since September 2000. She was instrumental in implementing staggered court times to allow more people involved in the cases an opportunity to park in the municipal lot. Court is in session one Wednesday a month, and the lot had previously overflowed as everyone arrived at the same time, leaving defendants, attorneys, and others involved in the cases searching for parking in the limited amount of spaces in the borough hall parking area. Novelli-Salyer proposed the current system, which allows attorney cases to begin at a designated time, followed by cases for those with last names beginning with A-L, and another time for those with last names beginning with M-Z. The system, she reported, is running smoothly. A public hearing on the new ordinance on the municipal court updates will be held at the Nov. 24 council session, which begins at 8 p.m. in borough hall. In other business concerning the municipal court, the borough council recently named Barbara A. Meyer to the permanent, part-time post of deputy court administrator. Meyer, was hired effective Nov. 1, replaces Cherron Gil, the deputy who recently resigned. Meyer recently retired as the court administrator in the Village of Ridgewood. When Novelli-Salyer is out of the office, Meyer will be permitted to fulfill the administrator’s various responsibilities, which include the processing of warrants, processing payments, scheduling cases, and handling tickets and complaints.
