Archer plans Apple Fest The 27 Annual Apple Fest sponsored by Archer United Methodist Church will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All are invited to the church on East Allendale Avenue for fun, lunch, and apple pie. Each frozen pie sells for $9; baked pies are $10. The proceeds from the Apple Fest will support the philanthropic efforts of their United Methodist Women organization. Every fall, men, women and children of the church gather on Tuesday mornings to make pies. Each volunteer works as a peeler, an apple cutter, a dough or spice mixer, a “holy roller,” or crust crimper, sometimes up to their elbows in apples, flour, and spices. Over the course of eight Tuesdays, up to 500 pies are made. But it takes more than people to make these pies. Each year, 24 bushels of apples and ample supplies of flour, oil, and sugar are used. Most of the ingredients are donated by church members and local merchants. After 27 years, more than 11,000 have been made and eaten. Archer United Methodist Church was built in 1875 and stands as one of two original churches formed when Allendale developed as a community. Sunday worship services at Archer are held at 10:30 a.m. Nursery and Sunday school programs are available every Sunday.
