Handcrafting Justice, a fair trade organization, will offer an eclectic selection of handmade items from over 30 countries. In addition to a wonderful selection of items for children and adults, fair trade coffee and chocolates will be available. Start holiday shopping with gifts that are sure to delight and help improve the lives of people throughout the world. All products have been certiﬁed as “fair trade,” which means each individual crafter or farmer has been paid a fair, living wage, all working conditions are safe and appropriate, efforts to preserve and protect the environment have been taken, and an equitable, transparent and fair system of trade has been assured. Book and Bake Sale set The Friends of the Upper Saddle River Library will hold the group’s annual Book and Bake Sale on Election Day, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale is held on the lower level of the library at 245 Lake Street. In addition to extensive ﬁction and non-ﬁction books for all ages, this sale has many holiday books, biographies, autobiographies, and a wide selection of Civil War books all at low prices. Troop sets Spaghetti Dinner Boy Scout Troop 133 of Upper Saddle River will hold its Election Day Spaghetti Dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 3. The meal will include salad, Italian bread, spaghetti, dessert, and a beverage. Dinner will be served from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the Old Stone Church Educational Building on East Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. Takeout orders will be available. Tickets will be sold at the door for $10. Proceeds from the dinner will subsidize programs and outings for the troop, ceremonies, and awards. Singles plan events The singles from Church of the Presentation have planned two outings for November. On Sunday, Nov. 8 the group will hike at Harriman, New York. A carpool will leave Presentation, located on West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River, at 9:30 a.m. The hike will be moderate, and will last about three hours. Participants are reminded to dress for the weather. Afterwards, the group will lunch at Gilligan’s, 366 Route 202, Pomona, New York, (845) 354-2159 at approximately1:30 p.m. for lunch. Non-hikers are welcome to join the group at the restaurant. A visit to the Montclair Art Museum is planned for Sunday, Nov. 15. A carpool will leave Presentation at 11 a.m. The featured exhibit is Cezanne and American Modernism. Admission is $12 for non-members; $10 for seniors and students. Crafters sought Crafters are being sought for the Friends of the Upper Saddle River Library’s Craft Fair, scheduled for Saturday, Dec.5, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Items must be handmade by the vendor. Lions Club recycles eyeglasses For more than 60 years, Lions clubs have been collecting used eyeglasses for recycling. Donated glasses are either given to support local eyeglass recycling efforts or shipped to one of seven ofﬁcial Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers. The Saddle River Valley Lions Club has placed “eyeglass collection boxes” through the club area. Gold and purple boxes with the Lions logo can be found at the following locations: Mahwah: Bank of America, Town Hall, Library and a drive up white box at 190 Franklin Turnpike; Ramsey: Town Hall, Library, Ramsey High School, Quality Optical (Main Street); Saddle River: Bank of America; and Upper Saddle River: Library. Run expected to attract over 2,000 participants The Eleventh Dick Meighan Memorial Run – an annual Thanksgiving Day ritual in Upper Saddle River -- will be held Thursday, Nov. 26, at 9 a.m. at Cavallini Middle School, 392 West Saddle River Road. This year’s event is expected to attract more than 2,000 participants. The charity race, named in memory of beloved Upper Saddle River resident Dick Meighan, is both a competitive road race and a fundraiser for DARE; the borough’s rescue squad, ambulance corps, and ﬁre department; the Upper Saddle River Youth Triathlon; Saddle River Service Corps; Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America; the Upper Saddle River Education Foundation; and the “Extra Mile” Scholarship Fund. In the last 10 years, more than $150,000 has been donated to these organizations. Pre-registration is recommended. Mail-in and on-line options are explained at www.dickmeighan5Krun.org. The fee is $20 in advance and $25 on race day. Pre-registered racers may pick up their shirt, race number, and timing chip Nov. 25 between 7 and 9:30 p.m. at Cavallini Middle School. Ladies’ Night Out set The Saddle River Valley Junior Woman’s Club has rescheduled its Wine and Hors d’oeuvres Soiree to Wednesday, Nov. 18. The event will still be held at California Wineworks on Route 17, Paramus. Prospective members are invited to meet the membership and learn about the activities of the club.
