Allendale May 27, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 The Northern Highlands High School Board of Education’s search for a new superintendent has ended with the appointment of current Highlands Principal John J. Keenan. Twenty-one applicants from three states vied for the position held by Dr. Robert M. McGuire for the last 11 years. McGuire will be retiring this year. The superintendent search was guided by the New Keenan named superintendent at Highlands Jersey School Boards Association whose representatives conducted workshops, seminars, and community input sessions during the search. After extensive review, research, interviews, reference checks and multiple meetings, the 10 member school board narrowed the field to seven qualified candidates and ultimately agreed on Keenan. The contribution was designated specifically for the acquisition of items on the teachers’ wish lists which would help to enrich the students’ learning experience. Among the many items purchased were books, math guides, posters, dry erase boards, easels and Geo Models. Principal of the 1,325 student regional high school since July 2000, and vice principal for two years prior to that, Keenan has 13 years of administrative experience as well as coaching, and class room experience at Northern Highlands and other high schools. Keenan received a bachelor’s degree in history from Springfield College, and a master’s in education with a concentration in administration from Saint Peter’s College. He was instrumental in bringing curricular changes and expanded offerings to Northern Highlands. His vision and accomplishments at Highlands include expanding facilities with a new science wing and renovating every instructional area.
