In 1986, the great big-band leader, Sammy Kaye, turned over his baton to Roger Thorpe. Since that time, Thorpe and the Sammy Kaye Orchestra have traveled across the country performing the sounds that audiences had grown to love. On Friday, June 5 at 2 p.m., Thorpe will appear at the Waldwick Public Library to share his unique insider’s view of the music of the big bands. Thorpe began playing trumpet when he was 10 years old. His first taste of success came at the age of 15 when he was a winner on the popular radio and television show, “The Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour.” Following high school, Thorpe went on to play trumpet for the bands of Glenn Miller and Wood Herman and eventually became leader of his own big band. Thorpe’s association with Kaye began in 1979 when the two were leading their own bands on the same program. The friendship that developed over years of touring together made the selection of Thorpe as Kaye’s successor an easy choice.
