Durante named to fill Ripston’s unexpired term
Vincent Durante has been sworn in to Barbara Ripston’s unexpired term on the Upper Saddle River Council. Durante previously announced his candidacy for the June 2 Republican primary, and will still run in that election, now seeking voters’ endorsement as an incumbent councilman. A Hoboken native, Durante later resided in Carlstadt and attended the East Rutherford schools. He served on the Carlstadt Fire Department as a fire fighter and in various officers’ capacities, including chief. This 12-year resident of Upper Saddle River is a vice president with World Gen, a pharmaceutical company based in Paramus. The new councilman is currently serving his third term on the Upper Saddle River Board of Health, and is a member of the Northwest Bergen Regional Board of Health. He is president of the Upper Saddle River Republican Club and a basketball coach for the recreation department. Durante describes himself as a life-long Republican with no hidden agendas. He said he is committed to keeping property taxes low. “It’s a privilege to live in a community like Upper Saddle River,” he commented. Commenting on the appointment, Mayor Kenneth Gabbert said he was pleased with Durante’s selection, and believes the new councilman will be an asset to the governing body. “He brings a real expertise in the recreation area, which is an area we are continuing to improve in our community,” Gabbert added. Ripston, whose term will expire Dec. 31, resigned effective April 8. She reportedly plans to move from her home in Upper Saddle River. Ripston was a member of the council for over 10 years, having served in various capacities. Her duties included council president, liaison to the USR Recreation Commission, member and council liaison to the Youth Guidance Council, and member of the Fields Committee.
Woman’s Club marks anniversary
The Woman’s Club of Upper Saddle River is marking its 55th Anniversary this year. Rather than host a party to host this milestone, the club’s membership has decided to use its funds to purchase a Protech Tactical First Responder kit for the police department. Each kit includes a shield, helmet, and chest plate designed to be put on in one unit. This is the most advanced tactical personal protection gear for law enforcement. Currently, there is only one other kit available to the police department. During the annual convention of the NJSFWC two club members, Rose DeBerardine and Carol Finnerty, were placed on the State Honor Roll for exceptional achievement in their club work. The Woman’s Club of Upper Saddle River welcomes new members. This group is dedicated to using knowledge and talent to benefit local communities and organizations. For more information, call Barbara at (201) 825-0207. The group will hold a dinner meeting on June 9 at 7 p.m. at the Brick House in Wyckoff.
