If a medical emergency such as an anthrax outbreak should develop in the Northwest Bergen County area, at least five towns are almost ready to deal with it. Office of Emergency Management (OEM) officials from five Northwest Bergen towns - Waldwick, Ho-Ho-Kus, Wyckoff, Midland Park and Franklin Lakes - are cooperating with each other in determining the best way to handle a pandemic should one develop. They have been working for almost a year on guidelines for the establishment of Points of Distribution (PODS) of emergency medications and protocols to be followed. The group has identified a location in Waldwick and an alternate location in Ho-Ho-Kus as the best POD to receive the medication from the county. The Waldwick Borough Council approved the undisclosed facility at its workshop meeting last week. The medication, expected to be Cipro or Doxi, would then be picked up by each town from this central location. Each town would then distribute the medication to its residents from its own POD and set up its own protocols to get the job done.
Local officials join forces to face pandemics
Waldwick’s OEM Coordinator Robert Ryan told the mayor and council that Waldwick’s POD would be at the Greenberg Center because it has easy ingress and egress routes. He said that Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Penna had expressed support for this plan and that written approval was expected. Ryan also said that ideally neighborhoods would get together and send one representative to pick up the medication from the distribution point. Police Officer Jodi Zuzeck, a member of the OEM team, said that initially the group contemplated having one distribution point for all five towns and considered the Wyckoff Y as an appropriate location. Once the police weighted in on the matter, however, it was decided that it would be more manageable traffic-wise if each town handled its own. She also noted that at first it was thought the medication kits would be larger and thus require a larger facility. Ryan also noted that the medication would not come all at once, but rather in installments, with the needs of first responders met first. Zuzeck pointed out that working out an emergency plan would be an asset for any emergency, including one such
as Floyd. “We have no mutual aid for this, and our own first responders overlap,” she said. Fire Inspector James O’Connell, who serves as OEM assistant coordinator, said that too often too much is activated and too many people respond, such as was the case on 9/11. “Efficiency there came in a few days. In a Waldwick emergency, everyone knows what to do. The Prospect Street house fire proved that,” he said. (continued on page 20)
