The Upper Saddle River Educational Foundation’s Town Night Out Gala was a sold-out affair. Held at the Estate at Florentine Gardens in River Vale, the crowd enjoyed an international buffet dinner, dancing, magic, and live entertainment. USREF President Sharon Reissman reports that over a half million dollars has been raised in support of the district’s K-8 educational and enrichment programs since the USREF’s inception in 2003. Attendees had the opportunity to socialize with old friends and to meet ones. Parents, teachers, administrators, and members of the board of education mingled during cocktails and dinner, followed by auctions featuring a meet and greet with the Jonas Brothers, a private tour of the White House and Capitol, a trip in a hot air balloon, tickets to “Live with Regis and Kelly” and the “Rachel Ray” shows, sports memorabilia, and the chance to be USR Mayor for a Day. “Science lessons in the habitat, performances on a professional stage, extensive classroom libraries, interactive instructional SMARTBoards, professional development by national consultants, are but a few examples of the highly valued contributions of the USREF,” explained USR School Superintendent Dr. Monica Browne. The latest project of the USREF has been the widely acclaimed Cavallini Television Studio. “We appreciate the community’s support and are very grateful for their generosity and trust,” said Reissman. “Be assured that our grant committee works with the school district to ensure that only the most appropriate and effective programs are funded.”

During the evening’s activities, the 2009 Award for Educational Excellence was awarded posthumously to Coach Mike Blake. His son, Kyle, accepted the award on his behalf, recounting a basketball game in which he scored a shot in the opposing team’s basket. “Everyone was upset, and I felt terrible,” Kyle Blake said. “We lost that game by two points, but my dad only
said, ‘Nice shot. Next time maybe you want to try the other basket.’” Coach Blake was also awarded a Congressional Commendation for his service to his community from Congressman Scott Garrett. The crowd responded with a standing ovation. For information on the USREF, visit www.usref.net.
