Milano, president of The KPMG Foundation and The PhD Project, has received the Bentley University Martin Luther King Special Achievement Award. The award recognizes an individual who has enhanced opportunities for students in the academic community by putting the ideals of Martin Luther King Jr. into action. Each recipient goes beyond normal job responsibilities, disregards personal risk or sacrifice, and demonstrates a willingness to break down barriers to help students. “Through Mr. Milano’s continued support and vision with the KPMG Foundation and The PhD Project, the number of African American, Latino, and Native American faculty members has increased over 300 percent in the past 15 years,” said Kwadwo Asare, visiting assistant professor at Bentley University. “Mr. Milano’s leadership has made it possible for candidates of color to leave successful careers in busi- Milano receives King award ness to pursue a Ph.D. in business -- a four to six year commitment, with no guarantee of success.” The PhD Project was created to address the under-representation of African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Native Americans on business school faculties. By diversifying faculties, the initiative will encourage minorities to pursue business degrees, and better prepare all students for the multicultural work environment. When The PhD Project was created, there were 294 qualified African-American, Hispanic American, or Native American minority business professors with doctoral degrees in all U.S. business schools. Today, there are 964 minority business professors, with 399 currently enrolled in doctoral programs. “His unwavering support and dedication to the program have been the keys to opening doors for many who may not otherwise have been able to accomplish this goal,” said Asare.
