Zambrotta appointed to seat on planning board
by John Koster Allendale Mayor Vince Barra has appointed Thomas Zambrotta, a Princeton graduate and retail executive, to a one-year alternate position on the Allendale Planning Board. Mayor Barra said Zambrotta had expressed a desire to contribute to the quality of life in Allendale, where he and his wife hope to raise their children. The mayor said that the one-year alternate position would be an ideal way to see if Zambrotta and the rest of the planning board work well together. The Allendale Planning Board has dealt with some detailed and time-consuming site plan hearings in the past few years, including one involving the John Fell House, now under study for possible acquisition by the borough, and Orchard Commons, now nearing completion as a passive park after the 3.4-acre tract was almost developed into 24 townhouses. The borough council also approved the initiative of Borough Administrative Officer Gwen McCarthy to appoint Jane Gerrity, a real estate sales person, as the stenographic secretary of the Allendale Planning Board and the Allendale Board of Adjustment. Barbara Knapp will retain her position as the administrative secretary. McCarthy formerly served as the stenographic secretary, but gave up that position when her duties in borough administration increased last year. Councilman Jim Strauch received the council’s approval in his initiative to have John Wittekind, the construction official Allendale shares with Midland Park, conclude the unfinished certificates left over from the days when Allendale contracted the Hillsdale construction office for inspections. The outside contract with Hillsdale proved unsatisfactory to Allendale officials, who hired Wittekind several years ago. Strauch pointed out that having the certificates incomplete could make it impossible for Allendale residents who lack certificates of occupancy and other paper work to sell their homes. Barra also report a donation of $25,000 from Patty and Ramon Alvarez, former owners of the Orchard Commons
site, to pay for an entrance portal or gate to commemorate the land as the original Thurston family homestead in Allendale.
