Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • March 18, 2009 Saddle River Lisa Filomia-Aktas, a partner at Ernst & Young LLP and Saddle River resident, was recently elected to the board of directors of The Parent-Child Home Program. This national organization is dedicated to ensuring that children at risk of educational disadvantage have the opportunity to enter school ready to read and ready to succeed. “Every child should have an opportunity to achieve their potential and unfortunately that’s not always the case,” said FilomiaAktas. “The Parent-Child Home Program is focused on preparing children to start school by educating both the child and their parent or primary caregiver. Having two daughters in kindergarten, I know how high the expectations are these days. Families that have had limited access to educational and economic opportunities or have recently immigrated to the United States, for example, could really benefit from this program.” Borough woman joins board of advocacy group Filomia-Aktas discovered The ParentChild Home Program through Ernst & Young’s Leadership Development Program. “By working with Volunteer Consulting Group/boardnetUSA, Ernst & Young’s Leadership Development Program aligns you with an appropriate organization,” she said. “I’m excited about the opportunity to make a difference for so many children.” The Parent-Child Home Program, developed in 1965, works with families of two- and three-year-olds in over 150 communities across the country to prepare their children to enter school ready to be successful students. Through intensive home visiting, the program helps parents challenged by poverty and limited access to education to create language-rich home environments and ensure that their children develop the language, cognitive and early literacy skills they need to be successful in school. This year, the program will serve over 6,500 families, completing over 300,000 home Lisa Filomia-Aktas visits. Filomia-Aktas, a partner with over 20 years of experience working with financial institutions, serves as the accounting advisory services leader for Ernst & Young’s Financial Services Office.
