DVDs (continued from Restaurant page) recognizes she can survive only if she keeps on moving, but when Oskar finds himself facing tragedy, Eli returns to defend him. Although this captivating film focuses on concerns of a middle-school student, parental abandonment, loneliness, and bullying, “Let the Right One In” has more than its share of violence, and is appropriately rated R. Bonus features on the DVD release include deleted scenes, behindthe-scenes featurette, and photo gallery. “The Three Stooges Collection: Volume Five, 19461948” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) contains 25 shorts arranged chronologically and packaged in a twodisc DVD set. These films marked the end of Curly’s career with the Stooges and the return of Shemp. Curly suffered a stroke on the last day of filming of “Half Wits Holiday” and retired at age 43. The genesis of the Stooges dates to vaudeville days and the entertainer Ted Healy. One night in 1922, some acrobats working with Healy walked out just before a show. Desperate, Healy asked boyhood pal Moe Horowitz to fill in. Moe got his brother Shemp out of the audience and the three of them did an impromptu routine that brought down the house. Moe and Shemp changed their last name to Howard and toured with their friend as Ted Healy and the Gang and later Ted Healy and His Stooges. In 1925 Larry Fine joined, and the act toured the vaudeville circuit. A star turn in a Broadway revue in 1929 led to a movie contract. In 1934, after a bitter dispute with Healy, the Stooges went out on their own. Stooges fans are passionate, and folks either love the group or find their constant slapstick shallow and repetitive. There are few middle-ground opinions. “Walled In” (Anchor Bay) focuses on recent engineering graduate Sam Walczak (Mischa Barton) who travels to a remote location to supervise demolition of the mysterious Malestrazza building. But a few straggler tenants remain, including the caretaker, Mary (Deborah Kara Unger) and her son Jimmy (Cameron Bright). Jimmy and Sam form a bond of sorts discovering the building’s numerous, potentially lethal secrets. As Sam begins to unravel the clandestine details of the architect’s life and his astonishing building, she is drawn into a dark and frightening reality that forces her to accept her own dark past and turn the tables before becoming its latest victim. Yet the movie is short on atmosphere and genuine under your skin eeriness. Instead, there are few shocks with little buildup and almost no suspense. The quirky tenants are interesting, but the foreshadowing moments never have proper payoff. The only extra on the DVD is a making-of featurette.
