Upper Saddle River June 17, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 5 Board awards contracts for school improvements Acting at a special session last week, the Upper Saddle River Board of Education awarded three contracts for the improvements at the district’s Cavallini, Reynolds, and Bogert school buildings. A fourth contract, which will cover the renovations at the science lab at Cavallini Middle School, is expected to be awarded this week. Bennett Company of Passaic received the contract for the installation of the solar energy collection system. Bennett was the lowest responsible bidder of the four companies that responded to the call for bids, with a price of $1,498,000. The district will replace the original, 40-year-old section of the roof of Cavallini Middle School with a new roof equipped with a solar film. Cavallini’s current heating and lighting equipment will remain in place, but the solar voltalic system will directly offset the electrical energy costs. The cost savings in the first year, in the form of rebates and reduced energy costs, has been estimated at approximately $58,000. The contract for the door and window replacement element of the plan went to Automatic Door Systems of North Arlington. That company submitted a bid of $426,000. Plans call for the replacement of the older exterior doors at all three schools and the replacement of the gym and stage windows at Bogert. Thassian Mechanical Contracting, Inc. of Belford received the contract for the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) component of the improvements. This contract was awarded in the amount of $615,000. Thassian was the third lowest bidder. The school board selected this company as the other low bidders’ packets were missing materials, a school official reported. The renovation plans will include the installation of air conditioning in the gyms of all three schools, and updated ventilation in the Bogert School bathrooms. Improvement plans also include the installation of lighting sensors in all three schools, improvement of the façade at Bogert bathrooms, and renovation of the ceiling in the Reynolds gym. Bruce Gordon, the district’s supervisor of buildings and grounds, will oversee this project with Metro Energy Solutions, and architect Joseph DiCara of DiCara Rubino. A preconstruction meeting has been set for June 18. Funding for these projects in the amount of $3,563,430 was approved in a December 2008 referendum. The State of New Jersey previously pledged debt service aid in the amount of $1.06 million to support this project. The Novels at Night book club will discuss “Buddenbrooks” by Thomas Mann on July 29. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Upper Saddle River Library at 245 Lake Street.
