DVDs (continued from Restaurant page) and fan commentary. “Miracle” (Walt Disney Video) stars Kurt Russell as Herb Brooks, the dynamic and determined coach of the 1980 United States ice hockey team. Brooks has an impossible dream: to defeat the seemingly unbeatable Soviets. Brooks inspires a group of undisciplined kids to play as they have never played before, transforming them into a team that believes they are good enough to defeat the Soviets. “Miracle” avoids most sports-film clichés, instead focusing on how the team members get in shape to face a formidable opponent. Director Gavin O’Connor interweaves historical footage into the title sequence, establishing events in the world leading up to the Olympics. Blu-ray extras include outtakes, a making-of featurette, audio commentary by O’Connor, and featurettes on the film’s sound and the actors’ learning hockey basics. “Elsewhere” (E1 Entertainment) focuses on long-time best friends Sarah (Anna Kendrick) and Jillian (Tania Raymonde). Though both grew up in the same small Indiana town, the two girls are total opposites. Sarah is a topnotch student and athlete, while Jillian is an underachieving troublemaker. Both girls want desperately to break free from boring small-town life, but Sarah is shocked to discover that Jillian has started meeting anonymous men through the Internet in order to find someone who will show her some excitement. Soon after this revelation, Jillian disappears, leaving behind only her journal and a video message sent from her cell phone. Determined to find her friend, Sarah enlists the aid of Jasper (Jon Gries), resident computer genius, who secretly has a crush on her. Their search, however, leads them to discover why no one wants Jillian found. Available in both DVD and Blu-ray, “Elsewhere” has elements of assorted thrillers in which innocents get involved in circumstances way above their heads. As the film progresses, suspense heightens and there are a few good scare moments. Kendrick does a competent job. She is believable as the bright, level-headed, and thoughtful Sarah, and she does convey that all-important thriller movie ingredient: escalating fear. Bonus features include deleted scenes, photo gallery, director and producer audio commentary, and a making-of featurette. “The Secret Life of the American Teenager: Season Two” (Walt Disney Video) is a bland copy of “Beverly Hills 90210.” Aired on the ABC Family network, it features an idealized collection of Abercrombie & Fitchlooking teens mouthing insipid dialogue, and trowels the soap opera on by the carload. These Disney-fied people are pretty, have the depth of a rain puddle, and carry more angst on any given day than older characters on daytime soaps. The sudsy plots hinge on relationships, breakups, concern about the future, betrayal, and one big revelation after another. Especially irritating is the halfhearted manner in which the writers address topics important to teens, such as sex, parental control, and peer pressure. The episodes have a preachy quality that might have worked when Annette Funicello was the iconic American teen, but seem completely out of sync with contemporary teenagers. Bonus features include a music video, the cast blathering on about their “secrets,” and on-set personal videos. Both the shows and the extras are huge doses of dopiness.
