Strawberry Festival returns The 52 Annual Strawberry Festival in Upper Saddle th River will be held on Saturday, June 13 from 1 to 7 p.m. The festival celebrates the area’s history of strawberry farming on the historic site of John Kroner’s strawberry farm, 318 West Saddle River Road. Kroner, who celebrated his 100th birthday this spring, donated the farmland to his church, the Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church, in 1975. Celebrate this event with local strawberries and ice cream, and homemade cakes. Other attractions will include hamburgers and hotdogs, a piñata for children, vendors, a special auction, and entertainment by a ventriloquist and local musical groups. Takeout will be available for the desserts. The traditional strawberry shortcake is made with freshly picked berries from a New Jersey farm. Strawberry experts watch the weather and follow news about the strawberry harvest to pick the best location for obtaining local berries on the day before our festival. In the wee hours of the festival morning, volunteers arrive to wash and cut the berries, which are then macerated in sugar for five hours before being made to order into a dessert which includes slices of freshly baked chiffon cake, strawberries, and local vanilla ice cream topped with whipped cream. This family oriented event is the church’s largest fundraiser each year, and the proceeds are used for missions. Call (201) 327-3960.
