Dredging White’s Pond emerged as one of the items of interest to Waldwick “Mayor” Devin Dischino during last week’s meeting of the “Mayor and Council”. Waldwick High School students took over for borough officials as part of Youth in Government Day. Mayor Russell “Buddy” Litchult, council members, and the borough administrator and clerk all had students taking their place. Dischino said that making the pond deeper and getting rid of the algae would allow fish to thrive, while the present warm and cloudy situation does not allow them to thrive. The pond is stocked annually. Mayor Litchult explained later that the dredging project would cost upwards of $2 million and that the borough would look for grant to fund it. He said boating could be restored to the lake as well. “Borough Clerk” Michael Fundaro asked that the traffic signal on Monroe Street allow right turn on red. All the stu- dents agreed, with “Councilwoman” Colleen Pelech suggesting that the light be eliminated altogether. Administrator Gary Kratz said the county had vetoed attempts to allow right on red there. “I see a Wall Street tycoon in the making,” said Councilman Frank Palladino of Dischino when the duly elected mayor and council returned to the dais. “I’m proud of the students,” he added. Former Board of Education President Carol Shepard echoed the sentiment. “The kids did an outstanding job; I’m proud of them. There is a fine relationship between the council and the board of education; it’s all worthwhile,” Shepard said.
