Page 16 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • June 3, 2009 The installation of the solar panels on the roof of borough hall in Waldwick is back on track after a calculation error delayed the project. “There was an error by the vendor in the original configuration, explained Mayor Russell “Buddy” Litchult. It was discovered during the course of construction that an error in design required 20 of the panels to be located elsewhere on the roof. The cost to relocate the panels, $3,500, will be borne by the architect for the project. “This relocation will not affect the performance and output of the system as Solar panel installation is back on track anticipated in the original design,” said the resolution authorizing the change order with the contractor. Borough Administrator Gary Kratz said that the part of the roof to which the panels are being relocated is also suitable. The panels are warranted for 20 years. Once the system is operational, the borough plans to apply for Renewable Energy Credits (SREC) from the Board of Public Utilities. The income from the SRECs will be applied to pay off the system installation, which is expected to cost $165,000. The new system is expected to save the borough $2,317 a year from the electric bill, based on today’s rates, and will generate $11,000 a year in SREC income, a conservative figure, according to the engineering estimates. Based on these figures, the estimated payback time to the borough is expected to be 12.39 years, less any grant monies. The project is being funded through the farmland assessment rollback of the DiPippo Farm on Crescent Avenue. When the property, which had been assessed as farmland, was sold for development, it was reassessed retroactively for a threeyear period, adding over $500,000 to the borough’s tax reserve.
