Some Waldwick residents are already availing themselves of the opportunity to pay their taxes and water bills on line. According to borough Tax Collector Mary Ann Viviani, the number of participants is small, but more than initially anticipated. “People that are using the service seem to be happy about it. We have not found that it has created more work on our part, and it is making it more convenient for people,” Viviani said. The on-line service went into effect with the May quarter. Viviani said 10 people paid their taxes on line and 15 made water payments. She said it was likely the tax payments were made because of credit card incentive programs, while the water payments were done as a convenience, considering the amount charged is very small. Payments are done through a link from the borough’s website (Waldwicknj.org) to a secure Chase Bank website; Visa, Master Residents begin to use Program on Roosevelt offered online tax payment option Card and Discover cards are accepted. The convenience charge is 2.49 percent of the amount owed for tax payments, and a sliding scale for water bills based on their amount ($.65 for up to $25; $1.25 for $25 to $50; and $1.85 for bills $50 to $75. Viviani stressed that before actually ending the on-line transaction, the taxpayer will know the exact amount being authorized, including the convenience charge. They can back out at any time if it is not for them, she said. She suggested taxpayers print and save a copy of the email confirmation for their records. Taxpayers with delinquent balances first need to call Viviani’s office to determine the exact amount owed, including interest. Credit card payments may only be made on-line not at the tax office at borough hall, she said. Call Viviani at 201-652-5300, ext. 1 with any questions. June 3, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 13 Rene Goodwin as Eleanor Roosevelt Rene Goodwin, of the American Historical Theatre, will present a first-person historical interpretation of Eleanor Roosevelt on Saturday, June 13 at 2 p.m. at the Waldwick Public Library. The program will encompass the fascinating historical events of the first fifty-five years of Eleanor Roosevelt’s life, and will be followed by a question-and-answer period. Goodwin has had an abiding interest in this extraordinary first lady who grew from an ungainly and unloved young woman to become the U.S. representative to the United Nations. Eleanor Roosevelt was a supporter of women’s equality, especially in the workplace, Goodwin views Eleanor Roosevelt as a superb example of a woman living in the shadow of a famous husband who managed to carve out a career and reputation for herself. In addition to her acting career, Goodwin is a recording artist with several CDs to her credit as well as a choreographer for the Mummers and many stage productions. The program, made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, is free and open to the public. Space is limited; however, and pre-registration is required. For more information call (201) 652-5104. Cardboard recycling a success Residents are making use of the new cardboard recycling program and are being asked to place boxes inside the garbage truck provided for compacting. “We have been surprised at the response and are going to have to rethink how to do the program,” said Borough Administrator Gary Kratz.
