The Midland Park Lions Club is holding a “Name the Seeing Eye Puppy” contest to raise the $5,000 required to sponsor a Seeing Eye Dog from the Seeing Eye, Inc. of Morristown. Contest tickets are $1 each, with the winner deciding the dog’s name, perhaps in honor or memory of a loved one or in their own name. Tickets are available at Le Chien, 26 Central Ave. and Family Haircare, 222 Godwin Ave., both in Midland Park. It actually costs $50,000 to raise, train and acclimate both a dog and its new owner. Not every dog is suitable for training. The animal must be bred from just after birth to behave itself around children, crowds, street traffic, business locations and a multiple assortment of daily activities everyone takes for granted. Blind persons apply for consideration for a Seeing Eye Dog. They and the animal must be matched up according to personality, temperament, age appropriateness and other

qualities to ensure a good match. Since the selected individual may not live in New Jersey, the selected person must be transported to the Morristown Training Facility. Lodg-
ing and interactive training are an integral portion of the overall costs. A Seeing Eye Dog will be at the Midland Park Town Picnic on Saturday, Sept. 12 so that residents can witness first-hand the effectiveness of trained dogs assigned to blind people. The Midland Park Lions Club, as are all other Lions clubs, is dedicated to assisting the blind and visually handicapped. Its fundraising activities enable the club to donate monies to Camp Marcella, a camp for the blind and visually handicapped; St. Joseph School for the Blind and various District 16A charitable endeavors. The past participation and cooperation of Midland Park residents as well as businesses has allowed the local club to be successful for the past 58 years.
