Gently used books suitable for pre-school through eighth grade readers are needed. Residents are asked the books be put aside until September when a drop off site will be announced. Presentation seniors host train trip The seniors’ group from the Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River will host an Essex, Connecticut steam train and riverboat excursion on Tuesday, July 28. There will be a two-and-a-half hour excursion via train and riverboat with views of the picturesque Connecticut countryside. Afterwards, there will be a three course lunch at the Griswold Inn, one of the oldest continuously operated inns in the United States. Opened for business in 1776, the “Gris” is so much more than an inn and restaurant. It is often thought of as a museum, housing an important art collection, many antique artifacts, and period furniture. Members and friends welcome. The bus will leave the church parking lot at 8 a.m. for the two-and-a-half hour ride to Essex, Connecticut, where the group will board the train. The group will return to Upper Saddle River at approximately 6 p.m. The all inclusive cost is $79. Checks should be made payable to “Presentation Seniors” and left at the church office. Club to discuss Mann book The Novels at Night book club will discuss “Buddenbrooks” by Thomas Mann on Thursday, July 29. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Upper Saddle River Library located at 245 Lake Street. Copies of the book can be picked up at the circulation desk. Cub Pack 133 holds registration Upper Saddle River Cub Scout Pack 133 is now accepting registration for 2009-10. All boys entering first through fifth grades are encouraged to join. Vacation Bible School set Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church in Upper Saddle River offers children from age three through elementary school to its Vacation Bible School, which will be held Aug. 3 through 7 from 9 a.m. to noon. The theme is “Crocodile Dock: Where Fearless Kids Shine God’s Light.” All children are welcome at this interdenominational Christian program. Children will participate in God’s amazing Bible adventures and learn to watch for God in everyday life. Each day, the children will sing songs, play team-building games and enjoy snacks at the Snack Shack. They will collect Bible Memory Buddies like Jacques Le Croc, the friendly crocodile who shows that God is powerful. They will also create Crawfish Crafts to take home. Preschoolers will enjoy a special program designed just for them. The children will join nearly a million other kids by taking part in a mission project of providing stuffed turtles, known as Comfort Critters, to children worldwide who were victims of natural disasters.
