Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • January 28, 2009 Ho-Ho-Kus Council discusses meter issues at train station lot by Jennifer Crusco Recent malfunctions of the machines that accept parking fees at the train station lot have left the Ho-Ho-Kus Council wondering if the issue might be related to the recent cold snap. Councilman John Mongelli noted that one individual was able to deposit a few dollars, but the machine subsequently rejected the last portion of the payment. Mongelli speculated that the issue might have been precipitated by the very cold weather in the region earlier this month. He reported that the police department had been tallying the funds and the department of public works had been attempting to correct the problems with the machines. The council plans to look into the situation, including having a borough official notify Metric Parking, which installed the machines two years ago. Mongelli noted that the borough’s contact from Metric Parking is no longer with that company. The meter system in use at the train station lot consists of two computerized meter machines that service the entire lot. In the summer of 2006, John Morgan of Metric Parking explained to the council that only two machines would be required to serve the train station’s 114 spaces, and those who use the lot would have various payment options. The meters can accept coins, dollar bills, tokens, pre-paid parking cards, and credit cards. Anyone who is parking in the lot just as a train is arriving may also make arrangements to call in a payment for his or her parking space from a cell phone. Everyone who parks in the lot is required to remember his or her parking space number and punch it into the meter to ensure that a proper receipt is issued for the transaction. However, once a receipt is issued, it is not necessary to return to the vehicle. A commuter may simply take the receipt as proof of payment. Each meter has a solar panel and a small, motorcycle type battery to power its operations. A server, a computer located off-site, updates the information concerning all the transactions in the parking lot. Cash collected inside the meter is deposited into locked (continued on page 21) Borough pares list of roads to be paved This year, Ho-Ho-Kus had planned to pave seven local roads, but has decided to pare that number to two in order to save an estimated $162,000. Last week, Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Administrator Don Cirulli said the initial cost of paving all seven areas would have been approximately $239,000. He noted that the Borough of Ramsey has been notified of the situation. Ramsey is the lead agency for a consortium of several Bergen County municipalities, including Ho-Ho-Kus, in matters of road resurfacing. The roads that will be paved in 2009 include First Street between Maple Avenue and Brookside, and Brookside between Warren Avenue and the railroad. J.
